    Hi ,
I bought some days ago some aftermarket 17"rims that I would like to add to my car(Gen3 2010)!
Since they have some diference to the toyota rims I should add about 10mm longer studs at the hubs !
But in order to Know what is the length of them I have to take them out ,so in order to avoid that I would like to know if anyone have measured them!

When i took the 15"rim out all I could measure , is that they (Studs) extend about 23mm (almost one inch) of the hub-plate!

So I am abit confused because I know that I need 10mm longer in order to screw the new rims but I do not know how long are the ones that are on for now!

So if anyone know and would like to share , would be helpfull!

Have you pushed the new rim on, verified the studs are not long enough?

Where did you buy the wheels? I'm just thinking, if it was through Tirerack or similar, where you enter the car info and it shows you compatible rims, the operative word is compatible.

Personally I would not go to extreme lengths to make the rims work; if in fact you do need longer studs, I'd just return-for-refund or sell the rims, get something compatible.

That's way too much work, would actually depreciate the car: if someone wanted to return to stock wheels they'd need to reverse the process.

Lug nuts can take this extra 10 mm, actually they have more than10mm to spare, if i decide to return to the original rims which I am planing to do during summer so i can visit more inaccesible beaches etc, so not trouble at all ;)
As regards the rims compatibility... You are right but I choose them so all I need is to change the studs so they can fit... Which actually I would like to do with some more reinforced, since I have heard enough stories about studs that break...

Actually I did test them, and the car runs fine, but since I measured them I have noticed that the nuts screw 13 mm instead of 20 that did on the original studs... so I need to add 10mm longer studs to use these 7 more mm of screw... Which is fine as I mentioned above since I can put the original rims back, anytime without problems...

    See point #3 here:

A Few Facts About Lug Nuts - Performance Plus Tire

which basically says if you (as an example) have 12 mm diameter studs (Prius wheel stud diameter), you should at a minimum have 12 mm of lug nut threads engaged. I think you're good.

The OEM lug nuts engage for an extra long length, due to the narrow shoulder that runs down into a hole in the wheel. I'm guess with your aftermarket rims the lugs are bearing on the conical seat?

Absolutelly right... That is why it screws only 13mm out of 23 that the studs extrudes from hub surface! While the toyota rims screws 20 out of 23mm, well nice to know that fact, you've mentioned above...

Come to think of it: the portion of lug nut that screws down into the hole in the rim is basically a locator pin. It stabilizes the rim laterally, but is not taking any tensile load. Tensile load only happens from the captured washer and outwards.

Maybe takes a little tensile, but if you cut that bottom portion off, just below the washer, I think the tensile load on the remaining threads is almost the same.

I can't make myself think any of this sounds like a good idea, I am seeing studs longer than the engineers intended, but without increased diameter, loaded further out from the base of the hub, less supported from flexing.

Helps if the hubs are snug fit, either due to correctly size hub opening, or spacer rings. Longer studs and oversized hub opening, not so good.

If there is flex it will destroy anything so any of these short or slightly longer studs prevent flexing... Of course someone can observe flex by adding maybe 70mm studs... But there will be other troubles in this case... More important than the studs that flex...... ... ...

Anyway , does anyone know to answer what is the lenght of the original stud ? I Believe it is 40mm... Can someone confirm that? Actually i believe that the studs are m12 x1.5 14.3 spline 40mm length
