I've just tossed a blanket or towel over the stuff.

I don't use tonneau cover that came with the car. I lost the flimsy one that came with the 2017 PRIME, and the hard cover one that came with my new 2020 is sitting in my garage shelf. I just use an old quilt bed cover. Old blanket would also work very well.

They make sun shades for the back as well as the front. I don't have one, but think about it sometimes. Not for concealment, but for heat reduction.

Great idea! Thanks! I know they're not made to hide contents of trunk, but it seems like they would achieve that - without using that cover that exists, which leaves a tiny space for contents. Does that sound right?

I would say so. But I only need to remove the tonneau cover in very rare cases like buying a new lawnmower or taking several people to the airport. Even fully loaded with a spare tire for a 4-week 6,000 mile trip with two of us, the cover worked fine other than being a little lumpy.

Here's a first for me. My rowing machine fits with no disassembly. I did have to tilt it sideways to get the part at the front through the hatch because the opening wasn't quite tall enough.

You just made me feel better about putting a full-sized spare tire in the rear of my Gen4  I still have more space than that even after it raised the floor a bit.

Not many pavers, though. There was a second load with a few more pavers, but not the plants - and then, later, there we’re two 400 lb loads of bagged gravel and grit. It handled fine, but I ran into problems when the tarp I laid down interfered with the “back hatch open” warning.
I have a bigger vehicle that could have done the whole thing in two loads rather than four, but I find the Prime carries almost the exact amount of stuff needed for one retired old guy’s preferred one-day work load.

Will 4 33" off road tires fit in this car? How about 3?

You MIGHT get away with it if you fold down the back seats and the front passenger seat, but it looks iffy according to my tape measure. It'll also depend on how wide they are since that will affect how far back you can stack the ones in the cargo area.

I could test it, but I don't feel like dragging 300+ pounds of wheels and tires out of the closet and loading them into the car for no good reason.

I store the off season Prius tires/wheels in the attic of my garage, but I physically couldn't lift the tires/wheels from my SUV over my head while standing on a ladder to get them up there.

I am thinking you would have a hard time fitting 4 off road tires, based on how much space the snow tires for the Prius took up when I bought them. Maybe there is a way with creative seat positioning?

    What about dogs?

My wife and I are looking to replace our '09 Pontiac Vibe. I'd like to get an EV or PHEV. We're strongly considering the Prius Prime. We have a medium-size coonhound. She's about 50 lbs, 23" at the shoulder and 27" to the top of her head when standing erect. If the cargo area isn't tall enough for her to stand up and turn around I think we'll have to look at other models. Anyone put their dog in the back of a prime?

    Thanks!

I have never taken our dogs in my Prime but Prime's cargo area deck to roof is only 20.5" at the highest point at the front of the cargo. The dog that size would be very uncomfortable for a long ride. If you can use the rear seats folded down, then it would add more head room up to close to 30".

Thanks. That's good to know. And the regular hybrid would be 24-25"? Hmmm....

You could consider the RAV4 Prime too. Might be really hard to get one but if you’re not in a rush to buy, that could be a nice compromise- long we EV range, potentially taller trunk area (you can measure the regular RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid and maybe subtract 1” tops). The compromise part is that it’s more expensive than the Prius Prime and worse fuel economy once you’re out of EV mode and in hybrid mode (But still very good for a compact SUV)
