do I understand my key situation?

    Hello, would anyone be able to double check whether I understand my key situation correctly?

    I bought a used 2007 SKS prius in 2019. It came with one FOB, which did not have any Toyota logo of any kind. The back of the fob is just flat.

    The car starts OK with the FOB in my pocket, and proximity light-up works fine as does auto-unlock.

    The car does not start when the FOB is inserted into the keyhole.

    I recently bought a second FOB from a dealer online, with silver logo.

    The first stage of reprogramming (Chicken Dance section 1) will not put the car into programming mode. So I cannot program this second new FOB.

    So after many hours of reading the internet, including Priuschat, it looks like to add a Second FOB I need to reseed the immobilizer system and reseed the SKS system.

    So basically only a locksmith can do this right? Or a dealer?

    That keyslot is really for the base model Prius without the smart key start function. If you have the SKS smart key, you really don't need the key slot as the keys will never leave your pocket. Why pay for something you won't use? Regardless if it's working properly or not.

    Just change your fob battery every couple years and you'll be fine. That'll be a $1 battery every time

    but to answer your question, the keyslot may be defective or you may have purchased a car that lost all it's keys and whoever programmed the new key (without logo), didn't program the keyslot function. They are 2 separate programming functions

    What's likely is that the key you have has had its case replaced, probably from broken or stuck buttons on the OEM case, and someone forgot to transfer the RFID chip, a tiny plastic black chunk inside the case, to the new key. Thus the SKS features work, but the fob slot does not. I can't remember whether the SKS programming portion of the chicken dance even requires the RFID chip to be present.

    Yes the RFID has to be present. Yes I believe the RFID was probably not transferred to new case. Seen it many times.
