Who has the most mileage on their Prius C? Any issues with the battery long term?

I think that experience with the full-sized Prius bodes well for the C. Consumer Reports found that a 10-year old 2002 Prius with over 200,000 miles performed almost identically to a 2001 Prius that they had tested back when it was new. So battery longevity really doesn't seem to be any sort of major concern. Add to that the fact that the car still runs with a worn-out battery, the engine just runs more often and you get worse fuel economy - so that means you can simply wait until that happens before you start thinking about what to replace it with.

 

The Gen II was engineered to last. The Prius C borrows many components from the Gen II Hybrid System. IMHO, your C should hit 200,000, if continuously maintained, easily. Just keep in mind that no matter how proactive you are, you will be totally out of warranty at 10/100,000. Unless your are in a CARB state, which I believe you are. If you do decide to keep it, once your payments are up, set aside $100/month and put it in an account. Don't touch the money unless your need repairs, ie, transaxle, HV battery, etc. Best case, you need no repairs, the car hits 200,000, you sell it for a few grand and have the money you set aside toward your next vehicle.

 

Heck, don't put $100/month into the account, just keep putting whatever your payment was into the account. Chances are you'll be able to pay cash for your next car by the time this one dies.

I didn't buy my first car (a brand new 1976 Volkswagen Rabbit) until I'd saved up enough money to pay cash for it (it helped a lot that I was still living with my parents at the time ). I started setting aside money for the next one right away, and as a result I've never had to borrow to buy a car. And as your current car's mileage grows and grows it's comforting knowing that your replacement fund is doing so too - so that if your car is stolen or is a write-off in an accident you can simply take the insurance money, combine it with your savings and walk out and buy another one.

 

all prius average good reliability long term. but no one can tell you if yours will be reliable.

 

You control reliability.

I run Redline D4 in the trans and 0w-20 in the engine. I run the best oil filter based on research on bobsistheoilguy site.

I use a scan gauge to see battery temp. Never cover the rear battery vent. In fact, I have removed the strut tower access cover to allow more ventilation.

When I blocked the vent with grocery bags temps were not coming down 112f.

If it was summer it's worst!

Clean the battery fan every 100k miles.

I'm only at 75k miles but plan on going 300k at least before considering replacing the car. I will see how well it's going by then and see if I can do 400k miles. If all is well then 500k miles lol!

I also cover my car and care for it so it will still look new when I hit 300k.

 

Absolutely no reason to trade up to the new Prius C. Keep yours and enjoy not having a car payment. You bought one of the most reliable long term cars, so reap the benefits.

Prius C carries 8yr/100,000miles hybrid warranty, regardless of CARB state.

i hit 150000 miles without any problems. replaced the front shocks and oil changes every 5k miles. this car is built to last. Unfortunately, mine recently got flooded. Was deemed a total loss. Was thinking about trading it in for an SUV at the end of this year just before winter. While I loved the gas mileage, I did not like all the negative stigma that came with the car. Mind you, I didn't baby the car. Still, there are too many morons on the road where I live. I will not miss all the tailgating by pickup trucks/SUVs. I've always yielded when I can, but still, lots of people want to drive right over me. I'd like to sit higher too as I drive a lot for work. This car was very practical for my purpose and withstood 2 bad winters to boot.

 

I drive the Prius C and also a Chrysler Grand Voyager minivan, which is a much larger and higher vehicle. I drive both of them pretty much the same way and see about the same number of impatient drivers from each.

 

ah, i see. Maybe I'm paranoid... I too have another car which I enjoy on the weekends. Hardly see the same shit with that car. And this may be area dependent. at least in MY neck of the woods(NY/NJ), Prius's don't drive like the ones in the west coast and neither do I. No matter how much you're going over the speed limit on the left lane, they all want to run over you. Everyone is a god damn Nascar racer around here. I just yield and mosey along. Certainly won't miss the aggressive attitude around the Prius...

 

I have a 2012 Prius C4 and it has 94k miles. I am on my 3rd set of tires. I take it to the dealer ever 10k miles. It has original brakes and has been very cheap to maintain. I still average 46-50 mpg. I think this is a great commuter car, I avg about 100 miles a day to work.

 

When I decided on a prius, I know they are very reliable cars for keeps. At your rate of doing maintenance, good chance you will past 200k miles in no time.

By the end of 2016 I had accumulated 60K+ miles (over 20 months), and then I decided to experiment with electric. Long story short: the EV that was supposed to eventually replace sweet Lil Mila proved to be inferior to it in all categories that really matter to me.

I am at 116K miles now, and starting from October 2019 I am planning - God willing - to add about 1,500 miles/month for the next 3 years or so.

 

Any updates on high mileage? I’m at 54,000 on a 2016, and I’d like to keep this car to 200,000 or more.

My daughter’s 2012 has 162,000 and has been a phenomenally reliable car. New 12-volt battery and basic maintenance but that’s it.

 

After my 2-year discouraging sobering with a Bolt (which was meant to gradually replace Lil Mila) I have decided to make her the "lifelong car", while splitting the family miles with an F-150 and CX-3. We may not need a new auto for another 10 years!

When would you say it would be good to replace the 12V battery?

 

CARB state.....what happens to the warranty?

 

I was at 191000 when I smashed mine up. I didn’t really do much maintenance and it was still a very solid car. I see no reason why I couldn’t get another 100 out of it easy. I never brought it in for service unless something was wrong and I changed the oil twice a year while putting on around 40k a year.

 

2012 with 308,000 miles. No major problems. Minor problems - front door locks stopped working electronically. Yeah that's about it.

 

Problem with the batteries. Only problem I ever had with the batteries was the one time I tried to give someone a jump. It sent a code to the hybrid system shutting it down. I had to disconnect the batter for 10 minutes. It reset the code and the problem went away. So my advice is not to jump anyone. With that said, I do a lot of highway driving and do not usually use the hybrid system too much. Plus the hybrid system is only being used under 25 miles an hour and with babying the gas pedal.
