The last thing that happened to the car before parking was a connecting rod when through the engine block. So, I believe the hybrid battery was at least OK at that time, but maybe now it's dead. The next question is what to do to fix that.
And, the MAIN Battery symbol is red on the LCD. I can also hear a faint click sometimes in the hybrid battery.
Historically, your symptoms (no charge level, etc) coincide with not performing step 3 of the safety interlock installation procedure....or the car is not recognizing it. or...the battery is dead
Thanks for that suggestion. It was all the way locked down, though. I did recharge the 12v which was down to around 10v. Now, I do hear more clicking in the hybrid battery and even heard a couple clicks under the hood. I have no stored codes that show in the OBD2 scanner but check engine and red triangle stay on, and main battery light is on. The car has 205K on it but has a Green Bean hybrid battery...no idea when that was put in. The car has not been run in at least 3.5 months. I don't see any charge indication of hybrid battery but maybe I'm on the wrong LCD Page. I'm guessing the hybrid battery now needs recharge or reconditioning?
This is an incorrect statement. What you really mean is, "I have stored codes that don't show in the OBD2 scanner. I know this because the check engine and red triangle stay on, and the main battery light is on." When you get a code scanner that can read all the Prius ECUs, it will not be such a mystery. I strongly suspect that with a capable scanner you will find codes that will suggest your HV (hybrid vehicle) battery is not too well. In addition, with a good code reader, you will be able to access the live data points where you would be able to see what the block voltages are. In doing so, you then have the knowledge to decide whether charging/reconditioning is a good course of action, rather than just guessing. Together with a suitable (and not too cheap OBDII Bluetooth "dongle" (technical term), Torque Pro (for sure) or Dr. Pruis (I believe) and maybe Hybrid Assistant are some inexpensive app-based options that will also be able to report on the many Prius live data points, including the HV battery block voltages. Just ensure the relevant Prius PIDs are loaded My suggestion would be that you obtain the necessary tools so you can scan your car to this level.
If you are hearing clicking, I would suspect a bad 12v. The 12v battery must be strong enough to close the relays activating the HV battery, as well as run the MFD and several computers. Clicking could indicate the 12v has enough juice to close the relays momentarily, but not long enough to complete the start process.
I would agree with this. My 2004 has gone through several 12V batteries, and each time one died the symptom was clicking & nothing else happening. -Graeme- 2004 Prius with >190,000 miles. Sent ?.
I'm planning to get the codes that don't show up in my current scanner. However, my statement was correct. I don't have any codes that show in my current scanner.
You said you charged your battery after getting a reading of 10v. That pretty much means it's shot. It may appear to charge up, but it will not have any useable capacity after being discharged to 10v (some people claim they can restore them with special reconditioning).
Thanks for the suggestions. I now have Torque Pro on my android phone and I have the BAFX OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner. It all seems to connect properly and the scanner lights flash like information is being transferred. However, it still says no codes stored even though the Red Triangle and Main Battery trouble indications continue. Also, there still are clicks in the hybrid battery when attempting startup. I think the scanner is only looking at the ICE ECU. I'm assuming there's only 1 OBD2 port in the car. Is there something additional I need to do with Torque Pro?
If you haven't already, you need to load the Prius specific PIDs. There are posts detailing how you do this if you can't work it out yourself. Look at posts by ericbecky.
I did got Torque Pro and went to settings and got to a list of PIDs for the Prius but don't know which ones to select for hybrid battery data or codes.
If Torque turns out to be a little difficult to deal with, go get Dr. Prius/Dr. Hybrid and it will tell you very specific information about your Hybrid battery. Another useful app for the Android phone is Hybrid Assistant. Both of these apps do not need additional configuring for a Prius. You set your initial preferences and then the app will do the rest.
Is that a real question or are you being sarcastic? Certainly you realize that battery is at 0% state of charge. It's not starting a flashlight, much less a 1.5L ICE.
Edit: I wasn't aware the HV pack could be measured if the Prius wasn't in Ready mode. I'm always learning something new here. Going forward, I know better. It's an honest question. I don't know if this is the state of the Prius in Ready mode, or a reading after an attempt to bring the car (via forced-charge) to some level of bluebars. The bulk of this thread has been about replacing the engine, so the discharged HV battery has been a mystery, especially since it is a second-hand pack from a vendor we all have our personal feelings about.
