I was a Tacoma owner for 15 years and in a reverse midlife move I decided on a Prius I love the car, but I can count on 1 hand how many times I’ve had over 1 passenger in my truck. So I’m wondering about removing the back seats and laying down a flat piece of plywood, maybe subcompartments, etc. for storage and expanding the space for my bike. Has anyone done this? It’s a 2012 standard hatchback version. Thanks!
Fold the seats forward/down first. On the lower bottom back side of each back seat, there will be a pair of 12 or 14mm screws facing upwards on left & right side. Just unscrew each screw. The 60 seat of the 60/40 has an additional screw that attaches to the center seat belt. You may have to remove the back seat bench to wretch the bolt loose.
Thanks! Any idea how this will look? I'd obviously cover it with something, but also don't want exposure to sensitive electronics. Is there a video or another thread you've maybe seen? Thanks
I had my rear seat out for a while and built a foamboard/fiberglass platform to sleep on during road trips. Worked just fine, and much lighter than the seat (which weighs around 60 lbs all told). I ultimately put the seat back in just to carry people, but the platform worked well too.
The hybrid battery will be a big bump still. Last weekend we were transporting bundles and bags of blackberry clippings, and I pulled out everything practical, the hatch floor, black tray, tool kit and spare tire, to make more room, then threw in a tarp. But yeah don't think you could do much about that battery. Consider a trailer hitch and a lightweight trailer? I'm kinda interested in that myself. I know it's not kosher, but just for once in a while, light weight? More than a few online reviews of the above product mention hole misalignment, possibly due to it being bent during shipping. Maybe best to buy locally.
Hey y'all - wanted to bump this to see if anyone had a pic? My thinking now is to remove the bigger seat and leave the smaller and outfit a compartment there. I was also thinking of just removing the backrests so I could install a 1/2" piece of plywood as a platform on the back
Not exactly clear what you're trying to do here, but here's a video title that may help: go to YouTube and put this into the search field: 2010-2015 Toyota Prius HV Battery fan cleaning. At 1.29 into the video, the rear seat (bottom bench part) is removed. Hope this helps...
Off-topic, just in case someone's following that video for it's intended purpose: it is really not necessary to pull off the seat, when cleaning the hybrid battery fan. There's one bolt under there that needs removal, and it can be relatively easily reached with an extension, through the gap between seat bottom and back.
