As one who spends several months a year in Florida, this thread has taken a turn that's creeping me out. I just made peace with the fact that you can't swing a cat in Florida without hitting an alligator.
Gators are pretty docile. They only rarely eat humans. If you really want to torture yourself (because I would NEVER want to do that!) check out this list of fatal alligator attacks. LINK I first heard about the man killed at Blue Spring from a friend of his. The friend is a SCUBA instructor, and has been diving Florida springs for 50 years. Since that incident he stays in the middle of the water when at Blue Spring and keeps his head on a swivel. His friend was snorkeling and was close to the bank when the gator took him. What concerned the instructor most was that the area of the attack is very close to the spring head where O2 levels are very low, hence there aren't large fish present. He told me that with no fish to prey on, the only reason that gator would have to be there was the human presence and the opportunity it presented... I dive the springs, and I've seen a few small gators while diving but nothing too scary. Of course the big ones are never too far. If you aren't freaked out yet try searching "Alligator climbs fence"....
That's another advantage you get with a Prius Camper. 'Gators can't eat you while you're sleeping in your car... ...Bears can't eat you either.
I finished installing a sink/faucet. Sure makes life easier than dealing with a hose! I found the design with a search for "diy camping kitchen". The link to the original is in the video description.
I made a new friend, however this is not a relationship without conditions. The price of friendship is sardines...
It's fairly peaceful here during daylight, however we're in a season where each night we're forced to defend ourselves from vicious attacks. Swarms of females, hot with blood lust, attack in unison. They single-mindedly focus on extracting and drinking our blood. I'm basically a non violent person but I will defend myself if necessary. I didn't ask for this war. I will do whatever it takes to survive. Consider yourselves warned.
I added an outdoor shower and a tarp for a total of 400 feet under vinyl. Currently using Zap It for mosquito control. They don't hunt me, I hunt them...
It's in central FL between New Smyrna Beach and Deland. I only recommend this camp with several caveats. I broke camp after 3.5 months. It was a great experience but I'm back to central A/C and indoor plumbing... Rarely shut the car off for the entire time with no issues. The inverter worked well to power three high power fans, laptop and cordless tool recharging. The Dometic CFX 28 was great, and now I'm using for shopping trips and overflow cold storage at home. I spent several hours buffing/waxing the exterior and now I'm on to the interior which is a train wreck.
