I got the 2019 AWD-e and looking to make some more room in the back for some car-camping adventures. Has anyone had any luck with removing the styrofoam compartments that hold the tire repair kit without damaging it?
I'd like to be able to use that space for extra storage!

I can't seem to find a video on this anywhere as of yet.

Thanks for the help in advance.

The clips that hold them down are very tight but do come up with a good tug.

Is there any reason NOT to remove the styrofoam/polystyrene inserts?

Would the regular cargo area floor still be supported adequately by the hard plastic that is currently in between the styrofoam pieces?

Would the Toyota-provided repair accessories bounce around if they didn't have custom-fitted styrofoam slots to hold them in place?

I would just like to be able to store some additional tools, such as, especially, a 12-volt tire inflator/compressor, a 4-way lug nut wrench, and a breaker bar. And maybe a couple of ice scrapers. I don't have any hopes of fitting in a spare tire into a Prius with AWD-e.

As far as I know, the deck box styrofoam pieces are used mainly to support the removable deck. If you are going to level the cargo / rear seat step anyhow, you might as well go ahead and remove the deck boxes unaltered, and replace them with something that can better utilize the space. Just be sure that whatever you use can support at least your weight when you sit on the cargo deck.

I already installed a spare tire donut and replaced the 2 piece tire repair kit deck boxes with the 3 piece spare tire deck boxes. I am now planning to cut the 3 piece deck box set to create additional storage space, for the same reasons - to build a Prius camper. However, am also keeping the original 2 piece deck box set unaltered, so I can revert to the OEM configuration for resale. If you decide to remove the Styrofoam deck boxes, you might consider doing the same.

Hi all! I'm also trying to upgrade the storage in my 2016 that I just got. Can anyone give me links to the threads that discuss replacing/altering the foam cargo deck box? Or to products made to fit? Thanks!

i used brute force to remove it which probably made the clips unusable, but the styrafoams still hold okay. Note with the AWD-e, under the styrofoam is the rear wheel AWD components. The electronics take up all the space above the supposed wheel well.

Any photos and description of your setups for the spare tire? I want to put a donut in there and get it setup nicely. Appreciate any tips or links on the best place to get it.

I have the foam spare tire insert from my 2016 Prius 3 in my basement. If anyone needs it, PM me. It should replace the insert from a Gen4 that didn't have a spare and it comes with the hold down screw for the donut spare. It doesn't work for my 2020 AWD-e as the rear motor inverter is in the way.

I have the central insert, not the side ones, but you should be able to reuse the ones you have. I will have to see how to ship the foam as it is bulky.

Hi Jeff, no, I don't have side ones. I'd need to find someone else with them... which someone else may have. What's the part number? Just to confirm. Here is a photo of my 18 four no spare foams.
