Hi everyone, we had an electrician install a 240v, 50 amp, NEMA 14-50, weather proof circuit/outlet last weekend. So, at this point I am deciding on a fully outdoor rated L2 charging system that will future proof us and allow me to leave my OEM Toyota charging cable in my car. Right now we are only charging the Prime, but I definitely see a Leaf or a larger EV in the future. At this point, my criteria is 32-40 amp, 7+ kWs of power, outdoor rated, with a reasonable cost (Leviton and Chargepoint are out cost wise). I'm comparing Juicebox, Clipper Creek, and OpenEVSE options. I don't really care about extensive wifi features. I'm quite confident in the quality of Juicebox and Clipper Creek, but OpenEVSE is quite intriguing as its $100-$200 less for comparable power specs. I bought a Open EVSE kit and built one in 2015. I love it. You can see the amps the car is pulling. We have a 2012 Leaf, a 2015 Leaf, had a BMW i3. each one pulls power differently. We now have a 2012 Prius Plugin and we use it for that too.
update: the j1772 plug microswitch died. i opened it up, cut the wires and spliced them together. it works again, but not a good idea to remove the plug if the car is still charging. i'll have to source a new plug and cordset. open evse does not sell ITT model, so the guy who built mine must have gotten a better deal elsewhere.
