Just purchased a 2014 Prius C and it looks like it will need a new engine. Wondering what years would cross fit Anything between 2012-2019? I am looking at 2018 with 2K miles on it. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't be 100% certain but I think you're good. They made remarkably few changes on this car through the run.

You purposely bought one with a bad engine? If not, how many miles and what leads you to believe you need a new one?

What specifically is shot on the current engine, head gasket, pistons/rings, crankshaft bearings, or?

For some cases a brand-new short block (everything up to the head gasket) machine shop refurb'd cylinder head and all new gaskets is worth considering.

If it's just head gasket failure, then a complete gasket kit is around $200, and a set of new head bolts around $100. Maybe 8 hours labour?

OTOH, a low miles engine is often the shortest distance between two points; just thinking aloud.

I ended up buying a 2013 engine with only 5K miles on it from ebay for $395 and free shipping within continental US. The car was totaled in an accident, hit from the side.

I was told that some one threw sugar into the gas tank and the reason the engine was running rough. I payed only 6K for the car. Now I wish i had my mechanic friend come and listen, b/c as soon as he heard the engine he said it was shot. We took off the oil pan and it looked like the oil hasn't been changed at all, and it was so thick and gummy that you could stick a pencil into it. There were also metal shavings all over.
