    It is how Toyota's big picture comes together though. So, you must address it. That is a fundamental of how they operate. Set long-term milestones and use that continuous improvement process to help reach it. The beauty of that process is all along the journey there are rewards. In other words, if there is a pause for some reason (a block), it doesn't matter since much has already been delivered.

    Put another way, Toyota doesn't strive for a big-bang rollout. In fact, most improvements are so subtle they go unnoticed. Their focus on incremental upgrades is how they are able to invest in new platforms. TNGA and TNGA-e are simply steps to note, as were THS and HSD. Each contributes in its own way to get to achieve overall goals.

    People focus on the milestones though, not even noticing that detail... hence the misinterpretation of purpose or the perception of a course change... especially when they feel compelled to check a box. It's what keeps a forum lively. It doesn't change anything. The milestones still get achieved even if intent or direction is unclear.

    We looked at Venza 2009 during cash-4-clunkers, but it did not have the minivan space I wanted at the time.
    We are already expecting VenzaH, right?
    We might have got that VenzaH instead of the new RAV4H we did recently buy, but of course the VenzaH was not yet at the showroom. I will actually give some thought to a RAV4H/VenzaH swap if I think it can be done advantageously, and assuming I like VenzaH better.

    Also I am certainly still having one minivan.

    Ha ha, if you assume the Venza will look like it did before it was dropped. The hood was rather huge and I had all kinds of room with the 2.7L in my wife’s Venza. I’m betting they’ll cut down the hood a lot and keep the weight down by using the Lithium Ion battery they have in the 2020 Lexus RXh. Pretty sure Toyota won’t keep the same 8.1 inches of ground clearance and the 19”/20” wheels/tires. They’ll go down to 17” and keep 18” for upgraded versions. Toyota will probably sell an AWD version but it’ll be a more pedestrian Cross-Over than the RAV4. Think Camry hatchback but more like the Prius V where it is squared off. Toyota is now starting to make hybrid only versions of certain models like the Prius so it won’t be a HyVenza, it’ll be just a Venza.

    Just days away from Toyota's reveal of the new from the ground up built Hybrids...

    Toyota Nerf Herder
    and
    Toyota Baskerville

    The Nerf Herder is a 3 wheeled, 2 door
    and the Baskerville is based on the large station wagons of the mid 70's.

    Pure speculation here, but I could be right.

    But I would love to see a Toyota Commercial where Jan say's " We've got great deals on the fuel efficient and reliable Nerf Herder".

    I'm pretty sure it would be less expensive to just increase the lithium battery power from the Lexus RXh, perhaps to 80 KW from I believe 49 KW and balance the the electronics and mg2 and mg3 keeping the same or maybe smaller mg1. That would give you I believe 256 hp with the same 2.5L dynamic force atkinson engine. With the instant torque of electrics it may feel as fast as a 306 hp v6 perhaps accelerating faster at speeds under 30 mph.

    I would prefer the same NiMH as in the standard hybrid system that Toyota has used with a proven track record of nearly 20 years.

    It is a good balance of weight, cost and efficiency.

    The Toyota and Lexus engineers are quite pleased with the new Lithium Ion formula in the latest batteries. So much so they’ve warranteed their battery in the the only totally electric vehicle (Lexus UX300e) in the Toyota line up, to 10 years or 1,000,000 km (640,000 miles). And this battery is cooled only with air (ok it’s a closed loop system tied to directly to the A/C - it cycles the A/C automatically as needed). This battery, and cooling system, is also going to appear in the new RAV4 Prime. That being said, I’m assuming they’ll keep a close eye on those first sales in China.

    The best warranty is one that you do not have to use. Given the track record of the NiMH battery system, even in cold climates, I will stick with that system.

    The NiMH pack is heavy for the usable capacity; only 40% is being used. Li-ion can use 80%, which is how it saves weight in Toyota hybrids. The Li-ion is also cheaper than the NiMH.

    Apparently VW is tied to variable voltages for their EV drivetrains. In contrast, Tesla (and BMW) have been doing variable capacity modules, constant voltage but variable current. Both can be made to work but constant voltage range, variable current, is an easier design constraint. You can parallel the circuit elements without having to introduce a different control technology.

    Yeah so what they usually do with the Lithium Ion pack is make it smaller like 2/3 what the NiMH battery pack is total and this saves even more weight. It looks like the Venza will be the same width and slightly lower height as the RAV4 but a little more than 5.5” longer. If they use the Lithium Ion pack they could keep the weight down to about 100 or so lbs more than the RAV4 Hybrid (comparing AWD versions).

    This is Toyota so they’ll use the same inverters in the Venza as the RAV4 Hybrid which keeps the costs down, especially with the current economic enviroment. So you’ll get the same amount of power for the motors as the RAV4. Lexus managed to make the rear inverter really small so it sits level with the battery pack. Lexus also makes use of extensive poly-aluminum body panels in their UX to keep the weight down, but I doubt you’ll see that in this Toyota Venza. The new Sienna, maybe.

    The usable capacity of either chemistry is nearly the same in Toyota hybrids. As you state, the Li-ion saves a bunch of weight compared to the NiMH pack. Comparing 2020 to 2017 Camry's, TNGA doesn't seem to have much going for it in the weight saving department, so we'll see Li-ion in the Venza. At least, the LE for a high MPG rating. The AWD will use NiMH though, like the Rav4 and Prius AWD. Toyota feels NiMH's cold temperature advantage is worth it there.

    I think the US is more likely to see Li-ion in the Sienna, as I see us getting the FWD option here.

    I would expect this isn't going to be the "Big Bang" roll out and reveal we saw with the Gen 4 Prius, when on a Las Vegas stage it was lowered from the sky on wires, to a fully active light show.
    This is a Monday Morning, get me 3 cups of Coffee reveal.

    All New. All Hybrid.
    Hmm...I suppose I could overthink their choice of that tagline. But I'll just wait until Monday.

    Sienna Hybrid is an all new design from ground up, from HV battery location under front driver and passenger seats, lowered vehicle hight without sacrifice interior dimensions by lowering vehicle floor.

    Company goal is to erase stereotype of "minivan".. make it fun to drive with sportier styling, added technology, safety and comfort to attract younger generation buyers, I particularly like the reclining middle row seats option..
