Welcome to PriusChat!! Are you sure the catalytic needs replacement? If it was stolen, do you also have a plan to protect the replacement? The price seems a bit high, considering that Walker goes for around $300 elsewhere. And you can find other replacements, though they might not be at the same level of the Walker product for around $100. I would continue to shop around, using the walker part# to compare installed pricing at the various shops. What is the warranty for the installed product, and will they stand behind their job if the vehicle doesn't pass emissions? I've heard used gen2 cats can be worth 500-800 each. There are members offering to pay over 300, so there must be additional upside $$$.
I just googled "Catalytic Converter Assembly 16337." This was right at the top of the page. Of course, it could be worse. Toyota sells their cats for about $1,400-$2,149.
If they are replacing a catalytic converter that is still in the car, I would insist the old assembly be returned to me. The pair of cats go for about $600 on ebay. If it's an exhaust shop, all they're going to do is cut the pipe right after the second cat and either splice in the new one or use a hydraulic expander to expand the end of the new one, slip it on, clamp it and bolt it up. 30 minute job for an exhaust shop if it's a rookie. You can always order the replacement cat yourself and have an exhaust shop install it.
Thanks! Toyota Dealership, private mechanic shop and another Prius mechanic have all told me it is the cat. Haven't given too much thought to it being stolen. I have a pretty secure indoor parking spot. Warranty is three years, 36k miles. Not sure about emissions. I'll have to look into that.
Does the car run well? If the only concern is that you have a P0420 code, that's not really a big deal unless you want it to be. If your state has strict inspections and the car won't pass due to code, that's one thing. If it's just the code, the car will work fine and it's really an unnecessary expense to have it replaced. My white 2005 had 290k + miles and it ran at 50+ mpg for over a year with that code before it got run off the road and totaled. My son's current 2005 has had the code since we bought it about 2 years ago and runs like a champ. He's around 200k+ miles now. And I was wrong about ebay, they're currently fetching $900+ for the set.
If it was stolen, you would have to be stone deaf to not hear that open pipe when the engine starts up.
I think you're right about this, plus, nowhere in that quote is there an oxygen sensor. If the cats were stolen, they usually cut the wires for the sensor also, doubt thieves are going to waste time unscrewing it from the pipe
Yes, the car runs well. Getting 50mpg at the moment. I might wait until my next emissions test in October to get it repaired.

Thats some markup, I recommend the OP just order it themselves and bring it somewhere cheaper. The cat most likely comes with new springs and a gasket (which the shop is charging extra for) and honestly this job is about a half hour of labor for a mechanic on a lift. I can do it in 10 minutes.
