The virus and science does not choose political positions...only certain humans will.

It's like getting cow manure on your shoes. You are most unlikely to get shite on your shoes, if you don't walk in the cow pasture.

Science and facts do not make lies...Liars do.

ALL the above are not locked down, but are included in the "essential businesses" that keep working. At least in my state. And adjacent states.

I'm currently in a so-called lock-down situation and location. But absent new circumstances, I'll personally be back to another shift of tending fields and herds again by the end of next week, giving a break to the relative currently on extended shift there. That piece of the food production chain isn't slowing down.

Unfortunately defining your reaction to the crisis as "participating in a covid-19 die off" is NOT a scientific position. IMO it's polarizing language that denotes a misunderstanding or insensitivity to the reality of the virus and the challenges faced by all of us.

I happen to agree, that we should be careful and conservative in our reduction of protocol. But defining that reduction as choosing to not be part of a Covid 19 die off, is taking a detour into that cow pasture.

If you know anything about Paleontology, "die off" is a scientific term in the reduction of a population or the diversity of a certain Class, Order or Species due to environmental conditions. A complete die off is called an extinction. Not political at all.

For example, the majority of all brachiopods "died off," except for the one species, Lingula. All blastoids "died off" and became extinct at the end of the Permian.

OK...but could I get you to consider that when you choose to use language such as " As for me, I do not choose to participate in the Great COVID19 die off of 2020. "
It becomes, regardless of any "paleontology" connection in definition, language that reflects a insensitivity to the whole picture? And perhaps actually "choose" is the more offensive term?
Because the contention that anyone is choosing to either participate in a die off or not...I think mirrors the division in how this issue has been politicized. There IS not a population here that is choosing to die off incorrectly or a population choosing to NOT die off correctly.
IMO how we handle the future in terms how we as a nation reduce our Covid 19 protocols is a much more complex issue.

I tend to think we probably actually agree on a lot of these issues?- Because I do agree that I think we need to be very mindful of reducing our protocols. I think a too rapid move to remove the anti-infection protocols we have put in place could result in a snap back or rapid increase of infections.
And I agree, that the only criteria really should be science and medical realities based. Because I agree the virus itself doesn't know politics and isn't a political entity. Even though I think our CHOICES in reacting to the virus HAVE been politicized.
But I think as we make these decisions, we need to realize that there are regional differences, and also real economic impact, that also shouldn't be ignored. For a lot people, it's not as easy as simply choosing to continue to embrace self isolation protocols.
There are a LOT of people right now, that are working and interacting to a degree of risk with the public as a necessary part of their jobs and sometimes for their economic survival.
So these are tough questions, and tough answers, not easily reduced to simplicity of choose to die off, or not die off.

I apologize if my posts were too aggressive. Sometimes if I think I'm "right" about an issue, I tend to self righteously swing that opinion like a clumsy club.
I need to always try to remember that my perception of a comment, and even my opinion of a viewpoint might be wrong, or at least in need of expansion of thought.

I look forward to the day, when debates like this, maybe even discussions like this are just retrospective narrative to a long past crisis, like a voice over in a Ken Burns documentary.
I look forward to when, we're mostly back to discussing whether a Prius owner should replace their HV battery or give up the vehicle.
In short, I do believe regardless,- we'll get through this. My hope is we don't unnecessarily beat each other up within our discussions along the way.
Even if we discover differences in viewpoint, opinion, real or imagined or misunderstood.

I understand there is a current shortage of ICU dialysis machines. They are different than other versions and many infected need them temporarily to aid their kidney function.

    Again, not political.

Good planning is part of personal responsibly, Those who planned well need not participate in the spread of COVID19 or, at least, participate in the minimum.

Agreed. I am working from home but I had planned on working from home some anyway. This situation gave me more management buy-in & flexibility. There are advantages to working in the office with the rest of the team and that will happen eventually.

For now garden planning & trying to navigate food store shortages are the minor inconveniences. We are planning building a wood deck and are concerned with insuring we minimize supply trips due to "surprises" when removing the old one.

I saved and saved so that I could purchase my 2012 Prius v in cash. The very moment, I started to save for my next car. Now that I have a sizeable amount of savings, I can stay home for quite a while and not be forced to go to work; only going out for bare necessities.

My great grandfather, Jurgis, immigrated to this country in 1903 with barely enough to pay for his passage in "steerage" in the hold of a luxury ocean liner.

He never spent more than he earned and save the little more he had to spare for a "rainy day." He passed this rule on to my father, Stan and to us, today. I revere my grandfather.

No one can fully prepare for a natural disaster. If it gets bad enough, whatever preparations you have made will be inadequate. That is why natural disaster response is typically done by governments, because they are the only entities able to marshall enough resources to the scale of the disaster.

Some planning is better than none.

In most Eastern European countries, like Lithuania, where grandfather Jurgis grew up, you want the least to do with the government as possible. They almost always came to take, NOT to help.

Responsible people prepare. Less responsible people, squawk and complain about how they were dealt a raw deal.
