Something crapped out. First battery failure?

If the car (hybrid system) is off, I doubt anything can go wrong, but you would lose all your settings, such as radio and navigation.

In the OP's case probably all he had to was to remove the speaker from the trunk and simply turn off and on the hybrid system with the speaker in the trunk removed, without having to do any hard reset such as 12 V disconnection.

 

Based on the Weber Auto video, that's exactly where the current sensor(s) is. It looks like the battery top cover is aluminum, so there's not much or any magnetic shielding. It is definitely plausible that a subwoofer there could confuse the current sensor.

 

Write a friendly letter to Toyota USA explaining the situation & firmly ask for a $500 dollar check to cover the $350 + $150 for your time.

Politely explain to them that Toyota USA has no documentation anywhere warning that a Speaker or Magnet placed in the cargo area would possibly harm the Prime.

When Toyota USA tells you to politely jump off a bridge, spend your ~$35 to ~$60 dollars & sue Toyota USA in small claims court for $1000 dollars. Your case will never see the light of day, Toyota USA will ante up and you'll get reimbursed.

I saw a similar set of warnings after I brought it in for service (55K, I think it was). Everything was fine until I was about to plug it in, but hadn’t yet.

The dealer couldn’t for-sure tell what was causing it; the codes from the computer didn’t make sense. IIRC, it seemed to all trace back to a probably-bogus alert in the airbag system. (???!) They reset them, and it’s been fine ever since.

 

Are you saying the cause happened while at the dealer?

Actually, if it works, it's more reason for Toyota to refund you for charging $$$ to fix nothing.

 

Not clear what or when the cause came about, but the error messages came out after driving to work, then firing it up later to charge up.

Also, looking again at the video I took of the errors it displayed, they were probably a little different from what you described. It said that PCS, hybrid system, and ICS malfunctioned. So maybe not as related to your case as I originally recalled. But still, if anybody sees that, it’s probably sufficient to just reset these indications.

Guys, I am thinking of buying Toyota Extended warranty. Do you guys think this type of sensor issues and warnings and then inspection will be covered by the Extended warranty.

 

Not if the cause of sensor malfunction is due to operator error. In OP's case, the subwoofer placed in the cargo was likely to be the culprit. If they can prove that, I doubt the extended warranty would kick in.

So some personal responsibility is totally uncalled for, for placing what is obviously a high powered magnet, into a car that is basically a computer with 4 wheels? Toyota didn't call anyone on the phone and say "please bring your car in so we can diagnose it". They were asked to help. You think they deserve no compensation for time and effort spent diagnosing, troubleshooting, etc? Time that a tech could have spent doing repairs on another car?

I don't think there's a warning in the owners manual that I shouldn't stab a tire with a screwdriver, either. This was a self-inflicted problem, not a defect in the car. We all do dumb things in life sometimes. When we do, you need to just accept the screwup, laugh it off and take it as a lesson learned, not try to push it off on someone else.

 

Sid, no one here has found a use for the Extra Care (it legally isn't a warranty) except some sleep better after buying it. In any case find out from the dealer how you can get the full paperwork so you can read the fine print. Anything not expressly included is excluded. You might have to buy the Extra Care, get the paperwork, then decide to cancel or not within a few days. Review the factory warranty so you know what is double-covered (a waste of your money) and for how long. Also, work hard to get the price down if you do decide to buy it. You can buy it from any dealership in the country, so shop around and negotiate the price down.

 

This is nothing like purposely damaging a part of the car. People have been installing high powered stereos into the cargo areas of cars for decades now. Without issue to the operation of the car from the magnetic fields of the speakers. If the auto maker is now installing a necessary component for the car's operation in the back, shouldn't they make that known to owners?

And this isn't even a case of installed aftermarket equipment. The OP had an item that can be purchased off a shelf that he placed in the back catgo space, because that is what it is, cargo. Doing so F'ed up the operation of the car. Reasonable people can predict what taking a screwdriver to a tire will do. How many could predict what placing a strong magnet in one certain spot of an unmarked hatch floor would do to a Prime?
