When installing the engine did you replace the donut between the exhaust manifold and header pipe? What size is it? Is it Universal?D

I reused the flange gasket on mine. No leaks at the flange. The engine comes right out the top very nicely. Pulling the ICE on a Prius is no different then any other automotive engine. Don’t mess with the orange cables. As long as the 12v and service plug are pulled, there is no issue.

Take your time and work slow.

It took me 16 hours to do a head gasket. Next time I have a prius that blows a gasket I'm just changing the motor

What do dealers charge to replace a head gasket? $800?

I think in another thread someone posted a dealers invoice for this job. 12.4 labor hours plus parts. Just the labor in my neck of the woods at a dealer is over 1k.

Doesn’t the 2015 have the updated pistons and rings that were supposed to prevent these problems or is the V different?

In model year 2015 the Prius v got both the pistons and rings updated. That said, I don't think that will prevent EGR clogging, and that seems to be one trigger for head gasket failure, maybe the main one. To prevent EGR clogging you basically need to clean it periodically. And an Oil Catch Can might reduce the clogging rate some.

Ah yes. I think the rings/pistons were more for the oil consumption issue.

With 4th gen, seems like they got the memo, with EGR cross-sectional area maybe doubled, and the intake downstream of the CAT. Third gen, well we improvise...

Not free, car was not on warranty anymore.
In my country it costed me 540$. 300$ for work and remaining are the spares including the chain of engine. Not sure that the location will suit you (Belarus). I bought the car from copart after damage in front, and car was actually marked with Run and Drive. After I received it and cleared all customs, we had all replaced and painted, assembled and tried to start - then realized smth wrong with engine. So buying from copart is not that safe under Run and Drive label.

Someone in States just bought a Copart Prius (2nd generation), for under a $1000 US: the engine seems ok, but the interior of the car terrible. The car was long used as a taxi for cats/dogs, and then sat, was home to rats/mice. They are getting there, but a lot of cleaning work.

I'm putting a plan together to replace the head gasket on my 2012 Prius. For those that have done this job, did you use the Toyota OEM head gasket or aftermarket (e.g. Fel-Pro)? and did you replace the head bolts as well or reuse the old bolts? Thanks for the info.

Sorry, I must not have has this thread on subscribe!! Well, I still have the Prius and still drive it daily nearly 70 miles. Car still runs great and since the head gasket swap I have only been doing regular maintenance like oil and filters. It recently started acting a little funny but I'm sure its just spark plugs as they are going on 3 years and maybe close to 50K miles. The car currently has just about 230,000 miles on it!! I am getting about 43 MPG and haven't cleaned that EGR since the rebuild. Maybe I'll clean it out when I have the windshield wiper cowl off for the spark plugs.

I saw one question in here on if I machined the head. Nope, I did not have it machined. I put a level across the head in several different directions and I could not see that the head was warped at all so I figured I would just put it back in and see what happens!

Also, would I do it again? Hell yea. It was fun. I'm a software developer so I don't get out much I guess. I'm thinking the head gasket in my van might be gone too. So thats the next project

I have 240k on mine. For some odd reason it stopped using excessive oil just prior to the HG job. I'd rather have a '15 motor but they're going for $1900 round here....I have another Prius of mine w 180k that'll need a motor soon. It but s copious oil. Maybe I'll trade it in for a '16

I used OEM gasket and non-oem new stretch bolts. Total jobs cost $100-150 in parts and took me 18 hours working very slowly and carefully. Have about 40K miles on the repair now (172K on the car).
