Is it possible to replace Prius head unit while maintaining all features?

If you're familiar with Crutchfield, you'll see that the answer is 'yes'.

 

What ones do people use and recommend?

 

I have the JVC KW-830BT. It was a turd until I realized you can upgrade the firmware. Now I'm pretty happy with it.

 

I have the same question. There are several options at Crutchfield... if you look at the 'installation gear necessary" on most of them you will see that many vehicle integrations are lost... no steering wheel controls, no backup camera or USB after "upgrading". This is not an easy question.

 

What do you mean by "would do everything worked"? I know for sure that there are wireless carplay and Android auto head units out there

You can get wireless carplay and wireless android auto setups now. Note that there seem to be some extra restrictions for using android auto wirelessly. I leave you to the harmonious supportive breezes of Google and their phone builders to work this part out.

You can also get aftermarket head units that "bring through" the car's native menu system for setting options and reading out vehicle info (including hybrid energy data). The iData Maestro system was created to serve this need, and now you can buy iData-ready head units from several big brands.

There are about two dozen head units on the market which support all of these features. As you might expect, they also have a spread of other features so you can decide how completely you want to replace the stock Entune system.

The spread is between maybe $600 and $1200 for the head unit, $250-600 in adaptation equipment, and you'd likely pay a pro 3-4 hours for installation. There is a random variety of surface finish materials in the replacement head units and their brackets and bezels. Some installers will paint or texture to match, but that's a very high-end touch. Some will blend in nicely from the get-go, others just won't look right.

I put a Sony XAV-AX100 receiver in our Prius c when it was about four days old. We have to plug in to use the phone-based guidance, and it does both Apple and Android. But both of our phones need to be plugged in for power anyway, so this hasn't felt like a terrible tax. That could change if/when we get phones that can do wireless charging.

You can expect to replace the entire Toyota system with better quality versions of everything, feature for feature plus the extras you want. It's possible today.

 

Wireless android auto and CarPlay uses your WiFi to send data wirelessly so that takes care of bandwidth. There are few bugs you can read on reviews with these wireless systems, but for the most part, handles google maps and stream audio. The head units are quite expensive right now versus the wired options.
