Dealer wants $4000 for new head gasket...advice?

    I honestly wouldn’t go to 911. They did a swap but only replace the bottom end with a Gen4 block & kept the Gen3 head. Separating the head would require machine work.

    I completed the 1st full gen4 swap back in Sept & since then I have done 3 more with 1 in the works.

    Roger over at Hybridpit has done a gen4 swap as well so between the 2 of us we’ve got Socal covered

    All head gasket issues? Nice to know someone taking on the Gen4 swaps, cheaper and more efficient motors

    Thx bro. It’s been a good min.

    Yes. For those that want the HG replaced it can also be done......but I do strongly suggest at that point u might as well do a full rebuild. No sense replacing the HG on a high mileage engine just to reuse the original piston rings, bearings that have all worn. Remember.....the 10-11 is also known for oil consumption due to worn rings.

    More like 10 through 13 and partway through 14, to where they switched over to new pistons/rings.

    There is no proof the 15s are any better. They are still too new

    Yeah. There's one "short block" part number showing on Amayama, for any 3rd gen year. Who knows if it's old or new style pistons/rings. I think either way, it'd outlast the car.

    There's one showing as still available from UAE for around $2300 (CDN). Also a lot more available from Japan, for $2900+.

    IDK what vehicles around you are going for, but I got my 2010 III with 168k~ on it, for $5000~ They were asking about $7500 if I remember right... and they took it too easy... Damn stealerships. Just in case you ever thing about dropping that kind of cash. I would also keep the battery you just got... maybe try to sell it off, unless you want to keep it until your new prius HVB dies.

    Initially it was believed that the issue only affected the 10-11. We noticed an increase of early gen3’s burning oil after passing 100k.

    Shortly thereafter in came the +12’s but not for oil consumption.....blown HG’s.after passing 140k



    I have a 2015 (build date 10/15) with 215k miles. So far no issues (knock on #wood)

    I disagree. I believe it is quite possible that major engine warnings will trigger a "safe mode," which is probably a milder version of the infamous European "limp home mode." Tying it into the braking system is not unusual as major ICE problems could cause cascading failures in the regenerative braking and the brake booster. Many cars trigger ABS codes for seemingly unrelated issues.

    I am also not so sure "dead at 180,000 miles" is a "rip off." While we would all like our Prius to go over 300,000 miles, the reality is that most do not make it that far. It depends upon how it was driven, where, and how well it was maintained. In addition, it is a relatively low priced economy car, so the point where it becomes not worth repairing is also lower than more expensive vehicles. Any car can be kept running forever, if enough money is thrown at it.

    Well the sandpounder is the reason these 3rd gen's are failing with tedious regularity around 180K: a piss poor EGR design, that Toyota doesn't want to know about.

    That reminds me, about your user name... ;)



    All you've got to "throw at it" is a can or two of brake cleaner, some shop towels, and a few tablespoons of Oxi-Clean.

    UPDATE:
    Went to pick up the car yesterday, asked to see the codes printout, first thing right up top was MISFIRE on every cylinder, then several pages I didn't bother looking at.
    Just to be sure I saw the car, it was partially taken apart, they didn't have time to put it all back together (I wanted to surprise them and see if they really had gone into the engine, so I didn't call ahead), so actually getting it later today.
    If anybody wants a moribund Prius with a hybrid battery with only 30,000 miles on it, let me know ;-)
    Oh, and since the car was also my office, while the driver seat has 180,00 miles on it, the rest of the interior is beautiful beige leather that NO ONE has ever even sat on!

    Well I'm thinking of my previous KIA Sorrento which had 307,000 miles on it and never had any issues at all. Got rid of it and then got my Prius. Almost every single taxi in Los Angles is a Prius, so I figured they must be really rugged and last a long time, since cabs take a beating in L.A., earthquakes mean lots of rough pavement.
