Sorry guys. There has been a strange mix up here. I had read an article about a longer range being a leak from a third party, and somehow ended up commenting that post here. Bob's seemingly bewildering response made me go back and discover that this thread is about the actual official EPA estimate and not about an unofficial leak. Anyway, I almost feel sorry for the competition who keeps aiming at a moving target.
Since I didn't see anything about the cost of the Model Y, I visited the Tesla configurator page. Looks like the only one available to order is the "Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive" model...and starts at 53K ( without the $4300 federal rebate ). Looks like Tesla is playing their typical game..."no base model available at launch". If/when the base model does arrive, appears that it will start at around 40K with 230 mile range. Correct? For some reason I was thinking the Model Y would be cheaper than the Model 3 ( granted, I have not been following too closely ). Looks like it isn't for me....because I'm a cheap arse...and I'm not sure the base model would work out here in Minnesota. The base model of the Model 3 and Model Y are rear wheel drive...right?
i was also thinking it would be cheaper, but that was dispelled quite a few minths ago, maybe over a year. but we may see the model 3 price drop as a result of surging y sales, and then y price drop when the truck comes out.
In fairness, the report is of an EPA-estimate, meaning that the EPA hasn't officially signed off on the test results yet. The EPA estimate for the Prime's range from Toyota was 20 miles, so the official value can change, for better or worse. When the first Highlander hybrid arrived at dealers, it was only the Limited trim. While I'm sure the dealer would take a deposit to order the base trim, the delivery date was likely farther out than ordering a Limited. The higher trim levels only being available in the beginning is the norm for most car models. Tesla sales model just makes it more obvious. The $4300 is estimated fuel savings in comparison to a direct ICE competitor. I wish Tesla would stop leading with that. I believe the price has gone up nearly a $1000 since I checked the site a couple weeks ago. The Y is the SUV version of the 3, so will be bigger inside, and using more materials. Yes, the base of both is RWD.
Since I am posting on a Toyota oriented web site... Certainly the fact that I ordered top of the line with all the expensive options had no bearing on my being able to get a Rav4h Limited built in two weeks when others were waiting 6 months. Divisions within corporations optimize profits to optimize bonus money. Hello!!! Once they can no longer sell as many high profit models, they go for volume. But while they are production limited, makes sense what they do. Expect it. And Tesla is no different.
The problem I have with Tesla is that they advertised a certain low price for the Model 3 for a long time and then essentially did a bait and switch. There are many, many articles about it, etc... Am I wrong? The fact that you couldn't even order a base model Model 3 for a long time was pretty ridiculous. Looks like the same is happening with the Model Y. I guess their marketing works though....I'll give them that. . Throw out a low number and get the "excitement" going...and then don't let people order it....nice work, Tesla. You guys are right...the $4300 "savings" is the "fuel savings" number. The fact they still feel the need to advertise that to knock a few $$$ off the quoted price is extremely amusing to me.
The SUV version? More like the liftback version. It actually looks a bit smaller to me? Like a Corolla vs. a Prius. I just can't see why the Model Y should have this much higher of a price tag.
Why does a Rav4 have a higher price tag than a Carolla? Because it offers more utility and because they can sell it for a higher price.
For the same reason the Highlander has a higher price than the Camry. The price difference between the long range 3 and Y is smaller than the Toyotas', and that is before adding AWD to the Highlander.
lol. thank you for showing me that you are worth putting on ignore. Outright false statements due to your apparent Tesla hate is less than worthless.
I wonder if Tesla will improve the "auto-pilot"... Tesla Autopilot Duped By "Phantom" Images | Threatpost
i hated our S & X when it would hit the brakes as we approached an overpass. But if I had my choice between breaking for a metallic empty Doritos sack blowing across the road in front of my car - or not breaking when a cyclist jumps in front of me? Yeah I figure it's the lesser of 2 evils. That's just how some crazy people think I suppose. If an imperfect safety feature doesn't work for you, best to get another car. In the same vein, I hear that some people suffer from Burns and head trauma when their airbag goes off in their face. Maybe those folks should get an older car with an old fashion - solid broomstick type steering column instead of one with airbags. People will come out of the woodwork on both sides to sue - either way. .
I know you sold your X a while back. Have you used Autopilot in a while? Phantom braking is almost gone.
If you were following at all you'd know that the Y was always being discussed as bigger and more expensive than the Model 3. Mike
On February 28, 2019, Musk announced the Model 3 while I was taking a nap. I ordered my Std. Rng. Plus Model 3 at 8 PM (CST) with options: $3k, Autopilot $2k, Blue paint In October, 2019, I bought: $6k, Full Self Driving (reserved) I was never surprised by the cost of these options and got what I wanted. In contrast, our last car from the local dealer, 2001 Echo, started off ~$11k but automatic transmission, electric door locks, and cruise control brought it up to ~$14k. It took multiple visits, hours wasted, as the sales critters worked hard to only sell what they had on the lot and not meet our requirements. In contrast, I knew what Tesla and options I was buying and got a fair price. Since March 26, 2019, we have put 19,289 miles on the car. It is the first across the intersection and first to reach the speed limit which puts me ~200 yards away from 'the pack.' On cross-country drives: 1,980 miles, $60 EV chargers though the end of January 2020 winter storms 711 miles, $25 EV charges in June 2019 Lifetime ~217 W/mile If Tesla business practices don't match expectations, everyone is free (and should) buy something else. If dealer sales works for others, 'Go With God.' Being envious of what Tesla owners got, unless you lost money trying to buy one, let the others stew in their bile. But for us, the Tesla sales model has worked as expected. Bob Wilson ps. I do not resent if others gets a better deal after I got mine (see Matthew 20:1-16 "The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard".)
Thank you! I own a 2019 Model 3 and a 2014 BMW i3-REx, using BEV version for metrics: Model 3 - Need to get roll-down metrics to determine if it was drag reduction. If drag reduction, it would be rolling resistance which we can tune. BMW i3 - I've got some aerodynamic tuning tricks. Measure the aero flow behind the car and wheel wells. Then use cardboard frames and clear plastic sheet to test aero tuning. Both - Apply lesson's learned and make 'kits'. Bob Wilson
