Excuse me, but I think it's quite clear that the Prius DOES offer better gas mileage and DOES produce fewer emissions. What's up with stories like this?

He didn't say just Prius. He said hybrids. Do some checking on how much better the mpg is on non-Prius hybrids before you get so uptight. Not the sticker, what they are actually getting.

How many miles do you have to drive your Prius to make up for the thousands of gallons of diesel fuel burned to transport your Prius to the Port in California and all of the emissions created by those diesel engines?

I hear ya Pinto Girl. There is so much anti-hybrid spin out there its easy to get hackles up.

As for: <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(malorn @ Sep 21 2006, 02:04 PM) </div>
How many Prius need to be sold in the U.S. before DOMESTIC automakers get the hint? :D

Considering my vehicle comes from the most environmentally friendly plant in the year, yeah, I'm Ok with the vehicle being shipped from Japan.

http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/environmental_r.../pdf/e_fa08.pdf

Thousands of gallons of diesel to ship a single Prius to the States? I'm doubtful. Please link this and we can talk.

Some shipping data from Toyota.

Looks as if 8 times less CO2 emissions per mile are expelled if vehicles are shipped by sea rather then by trucks. That means that for me to get a vehicle from Japan, I'm actually expending less CO2's then to get a car from the Big3 made in Michigan or Canada.....

First of all, GM or Ford would not ship a truck to Salt Lake City via just truck. GM or Ford would ship it by truck only about as far as toyota. The rest would be via rail. Good try.

How many thousand gallons of diesel fuel/hour does one of those freighters burn do you suppose. Or do they ship the Priuses on special sail boats?

And how many cars do you reckon are on those ships? Not one. Try 1000's. Shipping by sea is the most effecient way to ship a car...... Period.

Why don't you tell me, since you seem to have all the answers?

Okay, say for a moment all of this is true, and smoke belching trucks and ships are ferrying our fair Prii all over the place.

Aren't regular cars being ferried all over the place, too?

When it all shakes out, everything else being equal, the Prius is a good deal for the environment and for reducing our dependence on non-renewable resources.

Besides, pickup trucks aside, most domestic automobiles have a remarkably high imported parts content.

Face it, everything you buy is transportation intensive. Where do you think all of that stuff at WalMart comes from? Or those sneakers on your feet, for that matter?

Lets hope Malon is also anti Walmart too.

He better not watch TV either, because they are not made in the good old US of A. By not buying TV, Malon is saving gas from all those polluting ships....

Likewise, notoriety:

Noun 1. notoriety - the state of being known for some unfavorable act or quality

So, taken literally, the author says that good gas mileage is an unfavorable act or quality, during times of high gas prices. Impeccable from the standpoint of subtle propaganda but questionable from the standpoint of technical accuracy. As was the rest of the article.

Also, unrelated, if diesel is $2.50/gallon, if it took thousands of gallons to ship a car, call it 3000, the shipping charge would have to be $7.5K just to cover the fuel. On a $23K car? Nonsense.

Even pickup trucks... I was helping my neighbor put some tube steps on his F-150, '03 or '04, I forget exactly which, but I was surprised how many "heche en Mexico" stamps I saw on various components underneath the truck. That aside, I'm kind of new here, and I was just curious, if someone doesn't seem to like Prius's or hybrids or even Toyotas, why would they hang out here and have over a thousand posts?

Right now, I'm trying to make up for the single-passenger Hummers and Escalades I see daily. I'll get to the other trucks when I have the time. Geez, I'm just one man and a Prius. Give me a freakin' break! Making up for all the other morons belching emissions is a full-time job.

He's a GM dealer and since they don't have much to do these days, he spends his time here being obnoxious.

Sad. I'd like get a hobby, or go annoy Ford people or something. Life's way too short t be gathering up all that negative karma, and irritating potential customers.

Those sales statistics sound warped.

I've seen statistics month to month in 2006 showing that Toyota Hybrids alone outsold any other car manufacturer, or came very close. If their hybrids alone did that, there's no way hybrids as a whole account for just 1% of sales.

I call false numbers.

You guys should just ignore him. I do.
I really don't have time to listen to his broken-record complaints and trolls.

Just click on his name from a recent posting (above), and once you're in his profile, click the "profile options" button on the top right. One of those options are to "ignore user".

For me, I don't care if the so called American automakers get it or not. I'm not buying one of their pieces of junk again. Quality and reliability are very BIG factors when I buy my vehicles. So, since I buy very reliable vehicles, I pollute less because I'm not having to buy all those replacement parts. :)

Malorn is actually arguing that we must restructure our society so that we don't need private single-occupant cars for most trips. And he's right.
