I am looking to buy a used Prius. I was torn btwn the gen 3 (2011-2015) and gen 4 (2016-2017). But after this thread, i am definitely leaning towards gen 3. Not only to save some coin....but i really need that extra hidden storage space. I plan on driving across country and doing uber along the way. So gotta keep my car clean & tiddy. Have hidden trays beneath the floor will come in handy.
Just make sure you drive the 2 - there is no comparison, the Gen 4 is modern, almost sporty in comparison with the Gen 3 which is quite stodgy. 3½ yrs ago, I drove the 2 (both brand new) and I couldn't have lived with a Gen 3.
Interesting. I will consider it. But most of the gen 2s are pretty up their mileage wise now. So since the Prius will be a stop gap car for me until i buy a high end EV in a few years...i am not too concerned about the Gen 3 being a little stodgy. That floating island on the 3rd gen is kinda weird tho i have to admit.
Sorry - I didn't mean the Gen 2 - I meant the "2" to refer to BOTH Gen 3 and Gen 4. The floating island - yes, weird and unique, but it does have some hiding holes which Gen 4 doesn't have. And a better glove-box than Gen 4 - which is about big enough for a pair of gloves.
ah i hear ya. The extra storage space is always welcome! And the island kinda makes it look like you’re in the cockpit of a space ship. Which depending on how you look at it, is kinda cool. Thanks for your insight. I am going down to a Toyota dealer in NY tomorrow to sit test some. Theres only so much I can imagine looking at photos. Will post my opinions.
You better drive the Persona. I had one, 2013, and the ride was terrible. The 17-inch wheel/tire package was very firm and loud. Expansion joints in the roads would loosen your fillings. I traded for the 2016 Touring (yes, with 17-inch wheel/tire) but the Gen 4 is so much better in terms of quiet and ride comfort.
Found another. This one a gen 3 2012 model with the advanced tech package(moon roof & solar panel) for $10,700.
If you have the VIN you can register on the Toyota Owner's site to see dealer service history and option specifics on the car.
