Hi Folks, Combination meter in my Prius 2005 is not working. I did try to DIY by replacing the capacitor with 220uF, 16V capacitor. It worked for 15min. and then stopped working. Seems it got short as there was plastic burning smell coming out. Can I replace it with other combination meter from salvage yard? Or how can I get the original combination meter repaired as it seems that it got short? Please suggest. Thanks in advance for your help.
Yes, Any 2004 or 2005 Prius combination meter will work. The millage will read whatever the junkyard car had. Texas Hybrid batteries can set the millage to match your car.
OP - It definitely sounds like something went wrong when you tried to fix the old meter. We can fix a lot of repair attempts but once they short out and burn up the board is probably trash. Luckily we have a surplus of those 04-05 meters so I’m not worried about getting a usable core back. If you want to order a new meter it will already be upgraded with new caps and programmed to match your mileage. It would cost you $150. Free shipping and lifetime warranty. PM me if you have any questions. Matt TX Hybrid
Thanks folks. I did replace combination meter from salvage car, however, nothing lights up on dash board. Even the blinking red light (which has car shape with key image inside) is gone. Any guesstimate what might have gone wrong? Either the salvage combination meter was bad, however, even with my previous original combination meter, that red blinking light (car shaped with key image inside) was working. Do combination meter have different circuits where even if it is bad, the circuit involving red blinking light with car and key image inside can still remain active?
Because of the security involved, with respect to the key etc. I would think you will have to use Techstream or something similiar to install and register the combo meter. The salvage meter could be perfectly fine just not registered to your cars other ECUs. This is my 1st day here but it is a similiar thing to other cars. I don't know the process but imagine it is documented here somewhere. Good luck.
Did you use a CM from another 2004 or 2005? The 2006-2009 CM does not just plug and play with a 2005 Prius. You need to also replace the light cluster from your 2005 with a light cluster from a 2006-2009 in order to use the 2006-2009 CM. In addition, you will also need to remove the TPMS LED from the newer model light cluster before fitting it into your 2005.
