Once you've used OpenPilot for a few weeks, feel free to try out a fork that takes advantage of the better steering sensor that the 2019 and 2020 prius primes have. It should make for a smoother ride. Search for the zorrobyte fork in discord.

I just wanted to thank @illumiN8i again for helping me with the fingerprint process.

Got back from a mini road trip today and I'll say that for any distance driving, this is a must have. It took me a while to 'trust' it and even now I'm attentive to the situation around me and always have my fingers touching the wheel at all times to take over if needed. Well, I haven't needed it one time.

The one thing I noticed if I was in the slow lane, it would sort of creep to the right on every exit and correct itself due to the lane markings on the right disappearing at the exit. They should program for left hand drive countries to favor the left lane and stay centered in those situations. And vice versa for right hand drive.

Another thing I found is, I mounted my device near the center top of the windshield which means the actual camera on the device is about 2 inches left or centered which makes the car a tad bit hugging the right lane. I'm sure there is a setting to offset that by SSHing into the device and modifying a file somewhere.

Overall, happy with the purchase. Guess if your driving is mostly surface streets, then this might not be needed.

The default code already assumes a 6cm offset, so you should be fine if the device itself is centered. You could try re-running the calibration if you feel it's hugging the right side too much, but it may also be that you're used to driving a little left of center and OpenPilot is trying to stay dead center.

I don't know if you can get parts from a newer model and install it on your 2018. But if you want a better sensor, search the discord for ZSS, an even better aftermarket sensor from zorrobyte. I think he sells them for ~$200, though I haven't checked recently. The sensor he makes is extremely accurate, and those who bought and installed it (very easy to do, apparently) have said it makes OpenPilot run smoother than anything else.

Unfortunately, I mounted my device just about 1.5 inch off center towards the driver side :(

You can adjust for it by modifying the CAMERA_OFFSET in selfdrive/controls/lib/lane_planner.py

Never say never. ;) I've found it works well on some city/urban streets too; just depends on several factors including driver confidence. But yes, OP is the shiznits for highway/commuters. (y)

I'm interested in a Comma system for my 2018 PP, but I'm baffled by Discord. What is it, a thing like Slack that I have to download and install? Or is it a website? The website keeps telling me it's reserved a place for me, which is a bit weird.

Discord is like Slack. You can use it on the website discord.com or download it. To join the comma.ai community on Discord there is a link at the bottom of the comma.ai website. The comma two install process is much more streamlined now. You probably won't even need to ask for help on Discord. Just follow the installation instructions that can be found on Youtube.

This thread is getting old now the issues that were discussed previously are no longer relevant to the latest versions of openpilot.

The biggest strength of this solution. (y)

The biggest weakness (for me) is heat.(n) I removed my comma one several weeks ago because it's too hot here to leave it mounted on the windshield and the mount/dismount process is too much of PITA for day to day driving; just use it for long trips now. Will wait to see what comma 3 offers in the future.

Do you mean Comma Two or do you have the old EON? The old EON needs to be removed, but the Comma Two should be fine to leave on the windshield. I read that the openpilot team is committed to resolving any remaining heat issues with the Comma Two through software updates to reduce CPU usage.

Yeah, the original EON that I got 6 weeks before the ONE was announced. Some Honda Clarity folks (what I'm using it in now) are reporting same heat issues with the TWO. Folks up north or in more temperate climates are OK.

Do the regular Prius 2019 and 2020 also have the better steering sensor?

I believe the 2019/2020 steering sensor is an improvement over the 2017, but the upgraded sensor that a member on the discord sells is still superior to it.
