Did anyone ever confirm whether the updated 2015 rings (PN. 13011-37260) will fit/work with the 2012 pistons?

Sorry - I might have posted this in the wrong place on this thread.

I think yeah, based on this (parts numbers by years from McGeorge Toyota Parts):

    upload_2019-12-31_12-30-46.png

Maybe not bullet-proof, but in 2014 model year, the pistons (only) change, so it's new pistons, old rings. So I would think the inverse, old pistons and new rings, would work?

Thank you Mendel for your reply. I have been scouring the threads and posts (and looking at your awesome research), but was wondering if it had actually been done. I guess I'll try it and post back my results - it might be a month or so, luckily I have another vehicle.

The short block looks like an interesting option but will the head, intake/exhaust manifolds, etc... bolt on or am I opening a can of worms?

    Kindest regards -

The complexity's pretty much the same as a complete engine removal and cylinder head rebuild. Bolting the head on is no different than bolting to the existing block.

If you're burning a lot of oil, suspicious of the pistons/rings/cylinders/bearings condition, a brand new short block is a very convenient "out" I would think.

Full disclosure: I've no personal experience doing this.

Well... I have the blown head gasket and upon removal of the head I noticed I also have a bent rod in cylinder 1. Once I get the the motor out and inspect for any other damage (crankshaft, block, etc...) this option might be a real time saver. I was thinking about the peripherals lining up (EGR, hoses...) but a 2ZR block should be a 2ZR block, n'est-ce pas?
Dang - and I just bought the ARP ring jacket!

Thanks again for all you do for the Prius community -

I can now confirm that they WILL NOT. The Oil Ring Expander, Upper and Lower Oil Ring Side Rails will not fit in the old pistons, they are wider (taller) than the ring groove. I needed to order the new Pistons - part number 13101-37240.

Hope this helps someone down the road.

That's strange: if the 2015 oil rings are taller, in 2014, then model year with new pistons and old rings, if the (new) piston groove for the oil rings was also taller, then the (old) oil rings would have some slop?

Maybe missing something here. Maybe discrepancy on McGeorge Toyota site, for starters?

Where is it that states the 2014 had different rings? And the 2015 and the 2014 rings, and new piston?

Yeah - looking at the info you provided and my own research I thought they would fit. I ordered the new rings and after disassembly noticed one of my pistons was dinged up so I ordered a new piston. Yesterday, just for giggles I tried fitting the new rings on one of my old pistons and the oil rings (new design) were not even close - the new design has an expander and upper and lower "side rails". The expander would not even fit in the groove. I was not sure if I had received incorrect oil rings in the package. Today the new piston (part number 13101-37240) came in and I immediately tried the new rings - they fit! So... I just ordered 3 new pistons. I'll try to post pictures in the next couple of days showing the wider ring groove.
Maybe somewhere between 2014 and 2015 they changed. I guess that's why the TSB shows piston replacement(?)

McGeorge Toyota Parts. Commencing in model year 2014 they show new pistons. Then in 2015 both the new pistons and rings. Per my cheat sheet above (in post 683). I hope. Check it out.

I think old rings would fit in new pistons? But with slop??

I think if I were ever in these shoes, the piston swap would intimidate me so much: I'd just get a short block, and eat Kraft Dinner for a month...

Now would that be 3rd gen or 4th gen short block...

It's actually not too bad. Judging from your past posts, I'm sure you could do it. I am taking pictures and will try to put together a cohesive engine removal, head cleaning, piston and ring swapping post. Unfortunately, I have lots of other stuff going on so I am not posting it "real time" - it might take another 3-4 weeks to finish - stay tuned...
This site (and your input) has been invaluable so I would really like to give back.

Have you got TSB0169-16? I forget. That's the one with the piston replacement instructions.

Yup - that's the one I'm doing. I thought it would be just a head gasket replacement but when I removed the head I noticed a bent connecting rod in cylinder 1. I removed the engine and upon breakdown noticed the piston in cylinder 1 was damaged from the bent rod. I was hoping I could upgrade the rings but the new oil rings will not fit the old pistons (old piston part number 13101-37120 - marked inside piston as 37120). When I received the new piston today (part number 13101-37240) the new oil rings (part number 13011-37260) fit fine, so new pistons, new rings, 1 new connecting rod.
    Hope this helps -

    Okay... :)
Will the pistons fit the cylinder? Will the rings fit in the cylinder?
Are the grooves in the 2015 piston deeper? Are the whose for the connecting rod larger?
Toyota changed rings and pistons and possibly changed the block also.
They changed the rings in 2014, and since they don't fit the pistons for the 2012, and maybe
2010, 2011, 2013 also? Only for the 2014. They could have changed the grooves of the 2010-2013
so they would still fit those model year pistons, and in 2015 changed both pistons and rings.
So, in theory, if you ordered the 2014 piston rings, they would fit previous years pistons....
    ??????? Maybe, maybe not?

According to McGeorge Toyota Parts site they changed the pistons in 2014, and went on to also change the rings in 2015.

There could be a mess-up on their site, I'm really starting to wonder now. @RichG says the revised oil ring is "taller", won't fit in the groove in the old piston. The other way around, new piston and old rings (theoretically the 2014 case), the oil ring would fit, but there would be some slop??

My hunch is Toyota actually changed both the pistons and rings in one model year, maybe 2014, or 2015.

    This is an interesting page:

CRANKSHAFT & PISTON. 2014 Toyota Prius Two HYBRID | Toyota

It's an official Toyota parts site, model 2014 Prius. In the diagram at top, there's links for rings sets, and pistons. When you click on either it scrolls you down to the parts, and for both pistons and rings there's the old and new options shown.

    For reference, the parts numbers:

    rings:

    13011-37110 (old)
    13011-37260 (new)

    pistons:

    13101-37120 (old)
    13101-37240 (new)

Again, my hunch now is, that Toyota changes both the pistons and rings together. Maybe part-way through model year 2014?

That would make sense if they changed both, at the same time.
It was my understanding the the rings changed in 2014. Which could be true.
They cut them differently, but were that same size as previous ones.
So they WOULD fit the older pistons.
But in 2015, the change the rings AGAIN, and then also the piston.
Going on my past experience, and the one that pulled the pistons and showed no problems
with the rings, sorry, can't find the post to give him credit, I would suggest it's the
valve guide seals that are allowing oil to get sucked in the intake valves.

It would be nice to get some feed back from those who have replaced the head gasket,
who also replaced the valve guide seals could report on oil consumption. Is it less, or is it the same?

Or someone who has a lot of oil usage, and bad head gasket, replaced the gasket and seals and
    if it uses less oil.
Mine only uses about 1/2 quart per 10,000 miles if I keep it under 65mph. If I drive 70 for longer
periods, the engine uses about a quart.

Perhaps the reason the egr cooler clogs is because the guide seals leaking allows excess oil to burn,
and that goes through the cooler causing it to clog.....

    Food for thought! :)
