Curious: any recently purchased below MSRP?

It's all about supply and demand. Here in Puerto Rico you can buy a Prius below msrp because the car does not sell as well as in the US. The Yaris and the Corolla outsell the Prius maybe 10 to 1. My local dealer has two new 2005s that remain unsold.

 

In central Pennsylvania, our dealer took $500 off MSRP (pkg #3) without any negotiation. This is despite the fact that there is about a 6 week wait. I have heard similar numbers (and wait times) from other central PA dealers.

We live in Mesa and bought our option 3 PRIUS (driftwood) about 5 weeks ago at Big Two Toyota and paid MSRP, DOC, and taxes. It was painless because the price is set to MSRP and Big Two is a decent dealer to work with.

None below MSRP here in NC, as I'm sure it is in the rest of the U.S. At least I did not encounter prices above MSRP as I've heard from other parts of the country. That was as of the end of July.

It will be interesting to see what happens to prices when the tax credit drops. I think prices will stay at MSRP for a while due to the backlog of people who will have missed the 9/30/06 deadline but who are still in the full-MSRP mindset. Full MSRP is the price they expect and are willing to pay because that's what the market is (in their experience).

Once the tax credit drops down to 25%, more people may seriously consider the Honda Civic Hybrid since it will have a much larger tax credit at that time.

The partial expiration of the tax credit is concentrating demand. Once the tax credit fades away it will no longer be a now-or-never decision (until the next-gen Prius comes out).

OK, so I paid full MSRP, but I did get free carpet mats. Woo-hoo!

 

Here in Canada I was offered a Package "B" for $2500 below MSRP. The car is overpriced here by about $5500 so it's still not such a good deal. I'm quoting Canadian dollars. Use a 0.9 multiplier to get USD. Toyota (and other car manuf.) are still using the 1.4 multiplier of a year ago - that's why the prices are so high. They don't want to be weaned of the extra profits they are taking.

 

I'm located in north west Indiana and the dealer in my town sold me my 2006 package #4 for $1000.00 of MSRP, with no haggling at all.
Plus my salesmen said any body I send will receive the same deal...

 

I don't know about package 3...but here in Washington, D.C (northern VA)....there are no negotiations. They can't keep them on the lot. I went to 3 different dealers to find my color and package (grey w/leather, package 8). I was able to negotiate 1K off, because I had a quote (email letter) from another dealer. I also got the "Prius mats" and the surcharge removed because my husband's company buys 30K worth of parts from them per year. I think I made an awsome deal.

 

Here in Orange County, CA, I was able to get $100 under RSVP through the Costco program. Otherwise, it was MSRP everywhere, not including the ones with dealer added leather and chrome markups. The Prius is extremely hot here in OC.

 

I bought my Prius under MSRP, but only because I was unwilling to pay the full $599 doc fee. All the dealers in Atlanta use the same fee, but I said it was ridiculous to pay more for a Toyota fee than for an Audi (my previous car, which carried a $299 doc fee...still ridiculous, but that's another story). Basically, there were unwilling to discount the doc fee, but did knock $300 off the price of the car.

 

I bought about 3-4 months ago. I had to pay the doc fee, and MSRP. But I was able to delete all the dealer options that I didn't want (Glass Etching, Teflon Protection, etc.) since I orderd my car. I have seen them add between 1-4K for dealer options. So I guess I did ok.

I'm not sure what the MSRP was on my 2006 package 1. I do know what I paid for it though.....23,000.00 Good, or bad?

 

We found a dealer in VA (nearish to DC) that was having a 96 hour sale about a month ago. So we got $1500 off of MSRP on a package 7. They were only offering the reds at this price, and the silver and green at $1000 off, but because we agreed to come in that weekend and buy the car, the manager said he would give us either the silver or the green to us for the same price as the reds (which sold during the day while we were deciding what to do).

Here in south Florida you will pay MSRP plus doc fees at certain dealerships...Others do the same but then add on advertising fees, dealer addendums, etc. So you have to be careful here in Florida.

 

At the end of July here in Central VA, I was able to negotiate $24,500 for a package 6 which had an MSRP of $26,300.

The dealer had a few on the lot and was a bit behind on his monthly numbers.

And of course I already have my down payment down on one in Chicago and am supposed to pick it up in 2 days. - At full MSRP. <_<

 

Central Florida Toyota wanted $28000 for a package 1. The whole notion of getting a new Prius from them went out the window pretty fast after they dropped that bombshell.

 

<_< I recently shopped North Texas dealers hoping to get the maximum tax credit. Out of 8 dealers, only 3 quoted MSRP without "Market Adjustments." I must say they were quite open... responses like "We add $1,500 to MRSP" or "We add $1,000 to MSRP." Ultimately, couldn't make a deal anyhow. The dealers also "low-balled" my trade, of course wanting maximum profit on both the resale and new sale. In Texas there's a 6½% State tax advantage to trading since the tax is collected on the "difference."

My response generally, "Why would I pay you a premium for an '06 when in a few weeks the '07s will be available and my 'new' car will already be a year old model?" As I recall, the $450 increase in the '07 base price now includes the side airbags, so it won't be much of a price increase except on the basic packages.
