Anyone here have the open pilot comma AI?

    Steering override doesn't disengage it completely, but it won't fight you. Easy to override. Openpilot allows you to make steering adjustments without disabling it completely unlike Tesla. Comma.ai is much more conservative about safety than Tesla and makes it so the driver can always override easily. You can still keep your hands on the wheel with no problem.

    OK, good info...

    So, to clarify, my concern would be that with hands on the wheel, its steering movements could become sluggish. I gather your point is that it doesn’t.

    Yes, having your hands on the wheel won't interfere, but I think you'll quickly find that it's not necessary to keep your hands on the wheel. Openpilot has steering rate limits to prevent it from moving the wheel faster than you could react.

    FWIW, this was also a big concern of mine before buying the Comma system for my 2018 Prime. I'm 6'2". I quickly got used to it and feel it doesn't present a problem. I have never felt like the unit obstructed my view.

    Yes. It's worth it.

    I bought my system in mid-2018 for my 2018 Prime. Since then, I've logged about 17000 miles with it (there are certainly others who have logged far more). It was fantastic for many, many 6-hour drives (Toronto to Montreal) to visit my son last year.

    Driving any distance now without OpenPilot in my Prime (or AutoPilot in my Tesla) makes absolutely no sense to me. I couldn't imagine going back to actively driving on long trips.

    The unexpected aspect of these systems is that I find I'm more aware of the traffic around me. I feel I have more time to see situations develop earlier and to keep myself in a safe position.

    I can see that being handy. You can keep watching that suspicious guy behind you making erratic movements instead of glancing back and forth between the mirror and the road.

    I've had it for about a month or so, and it's truly amazing how far along it is. For those who want in, right now with the latest comma 2 release with the integrated everything, makes it a great time to jump in. Resale value is terrible if they do release a new hardware release though, so beware of that. Some people who bought an old version 2 months ago are SOL now and their old hardware has become semi-obsolete due to that. Generally buying now when the hardware is new means you'll get a lot of use out of the hardware before they release a new version in the next 2-3 years.

    Other than that issue, it's worth every penny if you do more than 30 minute drives daily. For less then that, I'd just skip it.

    Worth every penny.
    I drive about an 2 hours per day(60 miles) In LA traffic and this does all the stop and go for me. Before this system, I would then look for parking for another 10-30 min and it was grueling.
    Now it feels more like I am chauffeured and then i spend the last bit driving myself around looking for parking.

    The dynamic cruise control makes me nuts because it drives like someone under the influence, or with a severe problem with their depth perception. It will rapidly accelerate until it detects a car within the defined range and then slams on the brakes. God forbid someone changes lanes in front of you (which is a couple of times a minute in traffic), then it slams on the brakes like you're going to have a collision even though they're still like 5 car lengths in front of you. The dynamic cruise has no concept of a buffer space that it's allowed to penetrate temporarily in the interest of smoother braking and acceleration. I'm curious if this system relies on the Prius' dynamic cruise control. If this system is "smarter" than the built-in dynamic cruise control it might be worth a try, but if it relies on that system there's no way I could live with it.

    You have the option of using the Toyota dynamic radar cruise control or you can unplug the DSU and use openpilot ACC instead. I have the DSU unplugged because I prefer openpilot ACC. One of comma.ai's main goals this year is improving the ACC, so we can expect to see it get even better.

    I have it and love it. This coming from someone who drives for fun. Driving on open, hilly, curvy roads is fun. Driving in traffic is not. It definitely has its limitations, but the pros vastly outweigh the cons and it only gets better.

    Still waiting on that lane changing feature and stop sign/ light detection.

    You can basically grab the wheel and make a lane change. Not too much resistance. I have not issues keeping my hands on the wheel at all times even when it is engaged.

    It disengages when you hit the accelerator or the brake pedal.

    Have you noticed a difference between using the stock radar and Comma.ai’s camera for ACC or detection?

    Yes, openpilot ACC does a much better job of detecting stopped cars. This is a common problem on radar based systems because stationary objects are filtered out to avoid false braking events. Openpilot ACC doesn't give up when it loses the lead car in a curve like the Toyota DRCC does. Openpilot ACC also slows down for curves, and allows you to engage at any speed, not just >27mph.

    Insurance companies seem fine with it. You can read more about that on comma.ai in the FAQ section. Some have offered additional coverage for insuring the kit itself against theft or damage.

    Hey all,

    Are there any limitations on curved roads? Since it uses the stock lane departure/lane keep, I'm afraid it will drive me I to the ditch lol
