No issues with oil consumption - the oil level stays near full between 5k changes.

I am trying Valvoline Premium Blue Restore 10W-30 for a 10k interval to clean the piston rings for preventative maintenance. I intentionally used a synthetic media filter which I will change after 5K.

This oil was co-developed by Valvoline and Cummins to clean the piston rings on ISX15 engines that were experiencing oil consumption. Supposedly this oil contains a significant percentage of a high-solvency Group V ester basestock.

The cost is the oil is crazy expensive though - $79/gal.

Here is some background info on the product:

    https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/e6/19/8e/24bb28eefcfd7e/US20170029734A1.pdf

I suppose this product may be worth trying if you have a low mileage engine that consumes oil and is not worn out. Obviously the economics of the product may not make sense, but oil consumption is annoying to a lot of drivers and any improvement is appreciated.

I hope it works, but i'd be concerned that it was developed for diesel engines. Cummins doesn't screw around. I mean their the world leader in Diesel engine production. But iono. Curious as to the results you achieve.

btw - looks like you've got a decently spacious shop there. How did you manage that! lol

It’s not too expensive on Amazon — about $28 a gallon or $70 for three gallons.

I'll be very interested in seeing your results. So far I've been very happy with BG EPR and MOA.

"High Solvency" oils have been used for years to cut the crud. Problem is, once you cut the crud, you loosen up clearances "all around". Depending on specific issue, that can be real good...or real bad.

Respects...but I'll stick to 5,000 mile OCIs and using higher viscosity oil in "worn" engines.

The product was co-developed with an OEM so this is not your typical aftermarket snake oil.

Yep, "Restore" is the key word....big difference in formulation and in price.

Hmm. An organic chemist I am not, but some of the fancy words make me wonder how that compares to this stuff from a few years back.

On my car? We may never know because there wasn’t any oil consumption.

But on the Accord, the consumption has dropped by a decent amount.

Any current oil used for motor vehicles are "detergent" oils.

Amsoil signature series and redline will suit those needs.

The issue is that most engine oils are designed to maintain cleanliness, not clean up stuck oil control rings.

    Any follow up on this?

I called a local "Cummins" service shop and they didn't have it. Ryder Truck Center didn't have it either as the "Fleet" end of their business has now parted ways from the Rental side.
