Anyone have roof rack and cargo box on their car?

Thule has long been the primary supplier of roof racks and roof rack accessories for vehicles manufactured by Toyota and sold in the U.K. and Europe.

 

I bought a Thule Ascent 1500 for my 2008 Prius. Now I have a 2018 Prius 4. It works fine on that as well.

 

I ended up getting a Thule and was pleasantly surprised that mpg was hit they bad. About 5 mpg depending on how hard I am driving on the highway.

That pretty much agrees with what I experienced, with one caveat: As you get better at hypermiling, the improvement in highway MPG is less when driving with the carrier mounted. At first, I was getting about 65 mpg highway without the carrier and 60 mpg with it. Now, I get about 70 mph highway without the carrier but only get about 62 mph with the carrier. Also, the difference in mpg increases when driving into a prevailing wind.

City driving MPG improves with hypermiling skills the same - with or without the carrier - I get roughly the same MPG (city) with or without the carrier.

 

I've got a Prius V 2015. Almost always I have a roof rack with kayak brackets. Now I have a the smallest narrowest Thule box on the rack with the brackets. No rack I get about 40-42 mpg, with the racks, and brackets, and about half the distance with an 18 foot kayak tied on, I get about 40 mpg. With the Thule box added, about 38-39. Driving style really counts. If I worry the miles per gallon, no hard accelerating, taking it easy, I can always get +2 mpg. I've got about 30 k miles and original tires. Hope this helps.
