Just bought a 2020 Prius Prime. What’s the best and fastest charger that can be outdoors? I don’t have a garage. Thx.
The fastest you can charge is 2h10m at 240V/16A from a level 2 charger. You can use @Rob43 ’s adapter on your OEM charging unit to charge at 240V/12A and that’ll take about 2h30m. You have to tell him what type/style your 240V receptacle is as there are various shapes. Of course the standard household outlet works at 120V/12A and that will take 5h30m. Alternatively, the level 2 charging rate is 10-14 mph depending on your SOC (it charges faster at lower SOC). L1 charges at 3-4mph.
Welcome to PriusChat ! Take a guess here, you might get lucky ! The Rob43 240v Adapter Christmas Giveaway ! | PriusChat If you don't win it, your best bang for the buck is using your Toyota OE EVSE (charger) unit with my $49 dollar Rob43 240v adapter, you will charge up in 2:28 minutes. Rob43
The best quality is your Toyota OE EVSE, it's one of the best engineered and built units out there. Another excellent EVSE would be any Clipper Creek unit, they are very high quality and built in the USA. The Ebay/Amazon Chinese units are poorly built, the one I personally tested had a few cold solder joints. Compared to your Toyota EVSE, they're virtually hollow inside and have an extremely tight fitting charging handle. The daily frustration of plugging in and unplugging that tight fitting handle is reason enough to past on them. Rob43
>[IMHO] > That is a very nice installation! Only the unsafe yellow socket end is still on the loose when an owner takes his evse to work everyday. >The charge cord should be loosely draped, not tightly wound on the holder. >This is an advertisement post. Is that allowed?
Better to use the high quality Toyota built EVSE unit, than the cheap poorly built Chinese EVSE that you own. If I were you, I wouldn't sleep well at night knowing that 240 volts was coursing through the lowest grade parts that are soldered into the EVSE that you operate. Rob43
there are threads on what others are using, it's all over the board from cheap chinese knock off's to high tech phone app compatible computer tracking and record keeping
This is an opinion piece.... (and an income generator for you.) Good for you on getting all this free advertising! Can you prove the 20 Amp relay/contactor that is in the stock EVSE is NOT made in china? None of the other components come from china? That relay is either open or closed. It's not Rocket Surgery. My L2 / L1 'Cheap' EVSE is plugged into a dedicated 240 V wall outlet. I get the full 3.3 kW of L2 charging. Not a 'work-around'. It comes with an adapter cord to go from the 240V plug to a 120V plug. Not the unsafe opposite, which is what you are peddling. I like that I'm not using a dangerous, and possibly illegal, 'hoopty' adapter cord, which may not be Kosher with your home insurance.
Right! In summary, what I'm saying is buy an actual L2 EVSE. It could cost you only $116 more than spending $49 on a questionable pedigree, illegal (?), adapter cable that puts 240V on a typical 120V outlet. Plug it into an actual, legal 240V outlet. And get the proper 3.3 kW of L2 charging! Everyone is happy with a proper L2 EVSE plugged into a proper 240V outlet! You! Your Prime! Your home! And your insurance company! Everyone! ,,,except Rob43. You know you can afford it.
You can do it your way with your Chinese built unit THAT'S NOT UL LISTED. When you experience a problem, that will be the first place your insurance company looks. Everyone else can do it anyway they want... Rob43
