All my cars have always have names and they've always been male ... see, they were all manual transmission, what with the stick shift and everything ... ;D

The Prius of course isn't a stick, but he's still a boy. His name, that came to me immediately, is "Totoro," because as the sig line says, he's cute and pudgy, with those big eyes and cheese-eating grin, he's blue, like the chu-totoro in the anime "My Neighbor Totoro," and he's an environmentalist! (The totoros are magical woodland spirits who plant trees).

And my wife told me you can determine the sex of a Volkswagen by counting the number of tailpipes.

Lola! Definitely female! She's smart, fun and stylish! I admit the Explorer and the Honda before were male. Maybe that manual transmission with the stick influenced me. The Dodge before that didn't even get a name- a lot of cuss words, yes.

Well... my saleperson who also has a Prius told me she calls the gear shift a joy stick. I can't seem to think of it as anything else since she said that. I guess that would make Trixie transgender then... B)

My wife and I named our '04 Salsa Red Prius after George Jetson's maid...Rosie. She handles phone calls, always knows where she's going and tells us when to turn, responds to (some) commands, and makes the occasional whirring and humming noises Rosie used to make when Mr. Jetson was being a doofus. :D

The salesperson suggested "My Precious" after the Lord of the Rings. I was and continue to be a little obsessed.

Two names. I call it a car. My wife calls it a computer and won't drive it.

Sexing a Prius is very difficult as male and female are identical. Sometimes, you need to drive it for a while before you get a sense. Boats are female by convention, even when given a male name such as the carrier Ronald Reagan. Cars have no such convention and no jurisdiction has thought it necessary to make such a determination mandatory, so it's pretty much up to you to figure it out.

In the manner of determining gender by performance, i.e., a Corvette might be thought of as male and a Ford Escort, female, one gets into gender stereotyping. A male Prius would be a sort of "Sensitive New Age Guy", but male nonetheless.

My Prius is male. I named the car HUMU, for "Humu humu nuku nuku apu'aa", the Hawaiian triggerfish. The name is gender neutral.

To my knowledge, no one has done a sex change on their Prius, probably because it's still a relatively new model and most dealers would be clueless if requested to perform such.

    Good luck,
    Bob

p.s. It'd be nice if one could breed them; that'd cut down on the long waiting lists.

My fiancee helped me determine Prius' sex. I thought it was male, but she speculated female after she saw me bathing and rubbing her down so often. It became pretty clear when I bought her (Prius, that is) her bra. I realized she needed protection from all the rock stars trying to hit on her. I didn't want her defaced and scarred for life. These sweet young things can be pretty vulnerable, you know! :D

Wow. Some of you really get into the name thing. We named ours. It's red. We decided she was girl. Her name is Ruby. Works for our two year old daughter. :)

My cars have always had a name. It makes it easier to "talk" to them when that becomes necessary. I guess I got it from my mother who named her cars, and her father who driveled with the window down so he could "comment" on the "drivers" around him. I learned a lot from him! So my present car is Belle and the pprevious car was "The Beast"

My son named mine "Sparky". When he was a baby he named my old '93 explorer "Ding" because it the chimes sounded whenever a door was opened, even if the key was out and the lights were off. So when that one was totalled and I got a '94 it became "New Ding"
They have all been gender neutral names as sex was difficult to determine. Lately I have seen some Obviously male Pick up trucks on the road, they have scrotums hanging under them.
