2018 Prius Prime to 2021 Rav4 Prime?

    It should get an infinite number of miles per gallon in EV.

    I'm really curious about the gas mileage in HV mode so see if it's better than the current Rav4. So far, all I've seen is the range in EV mode, which looks pretty good to me.

    Either way, I can't see how it is possible for a car that big to get better economy than the Prius Prime. Just too much mass and too big of a hole to punch in the air.

    Having driven a Tesla Model S and 3 within the last few months, I'd say buy something with an ICE installed...

    The bigger battery will help it get better gas mileage than the RAV4 Hybrid like the Prius Prime gets better gas mileage than the regular Prius with the NiMH. But no way is the RAV4 Prime going to get 50 mpg. Compare the 90 mpge of the RAV4 Prime to the Prius Prime’s 133 mpge. I’d say maybe 40 or 41 mpg combined.

    But you are looking at about $10,000+ more for a tricked out XSE than a PP Limited so there’s that too.

    The GAS mileage of a Prius Prime is basically the same as a regular Prius. The same will hold true with the mileage for the RAV4 hybrid and the RAV4 Prime

    ^ I'd argue that the Prime's mpg in HV mode is better than the Prius so I'd expect the RAV4 Prime's mpg in HV mode to be better than the RAV4h. If driven sedately, I'd wager the RAV4 Prime can hit at least 50mpg in city driving. (I'd say 53-54 is possible)

    (Just comparing our 2016 Prius Touring at 58mpg vs. our Prime's 64mpg... the RAV4h can probably beat the 40mpg it's rated at (because this generation of HSD appears to be underrated at the EPA level), the RAV4 Prime should be able to best it. The test will probably show a 1-2mpg improvement over the RAV4h but real life difference will be significantly more.

    It's rated at 6L/100km combined in Canada (39mpg) and that's what Motoring TV got in their tests (but they included their acceleration tests, brake test, idling and driving enthusiastic as they admitted)

    Here's a "real world" test from another Canadian reviewer. He's based in Vancouver, BC. (Motoring TV is based in Toronto). Check out his numbers then you'll understand where I'm getting my estimates.

    I know!! But since I already bought my Prime, I’m looking elsewhere. (I.e. saving up for my next BEV)

    Toyota is notorious for underestimating upcoming vehicles. When Danny went to Japan to test drive the Prius Prime in 2016, Toyota was estimating the Prius Prime was going to get 22 miles EV range, 120 MPGe, and 52 mpg.

    I fully expect final EPA to come in above the current RAV4 Prime estimates.

    And I fully expect @bisco and others (@HPrimeAdvanced, @benagi, @m8547, @Mark57, etc) to come in way above EPA if they get their hands on a RAV4 Prime.

    The only reason I "might" want a Rav4 Prime is because of this quote:

    "RAV4 Prime's powertrain rockets this SUV from 0 to 60 in an estimated 5.8 seconds"

    Certainly there are other fast cars, but I like Toyota's quality.

    Time will tell....

    Yeah. I absolutely love my Prime. But my wife and I know that it's only a matter of time before we have to replace her '07 Prius. I would love it if the first time I ever got a new car that it was for her. If we can somehow afford it, it would make a spectacular (but belated) 45th anniversary present.

    This has got to be a poke in the eye to the Lexus engineers. Their system is rather aggressive at using the battery/motors, even more so than the Prime in HV. Maybe they are taking a wait and see on how this sells before making a move. They’ll at least wait until the production moves to Canada for the 2022 model of the NXh.

    I thought being economical would mean buying a reliable car and keeping it ten years or more. With a 45th anniversary (I am only on my 35th), life is too short to just worry about one more car or two before kicking the bucket. Although the Mrs. and I each have a 2017 Prime, we recently sold my '98 4runner, so the need for an inclement weather vehicle, more volume for toting bigger things, and as an unexpected bonus, sporty acceleration to finally end the Prius jokes. I am sold. I am willing to put a deposit down with the first dealer than promises to sell at MSRP with no add-on dealer paks on the Monroney. Both garage L2 chargers are close enough to charge a vehicle outside the garage, so I am set. I am willing to carpool a rental car with any others from the NC area willing to go to the NE if necessary to get their RAV4 Prime. If no takers, I will fly in. That will be my third one-way flight to buy a Toyota, first was to Charleston, WVA for a 2004 Prius, and in 2017 to Providence, RI for one of the 2017 Primes.

    If we like the design enough, I would imagine the Lexus NXh (PHEV?) will be our next vehicle for my wife. Our Volvo X60 T8 PHEV will be coming off lease roughly around the time it will be released. Of course this is assuming it will be released. I think it's a pretty safe bet that the new generation NX will be Lexus's first PHEV however. I didn't want to purchase our Volvo due to reliability concerns and it being our first PHEV, but I think I will feel good enough about Toyota reliability to make the purchase.

    Sales and service will be allowed in Michiga .


    Now my choice this year will be Rav4 Prime or Tesla.

    I will have one of them by the end of the year.

    If the $36,400 price Edmunds listed for the Rav4 Prime listed is true, the difference with the Model Y AWD long range is $15,600. More, depending on how much of the Rav4 tax credit you can get. The RWD Model Y is $48,000. The standard range will arrive next year, and will be around $40k, possibly under.
