Some 2010 Toyota Vehicle Oil Change Intervals Officially Revised To 10000 miles/1 year (verified!)

My 2010 is going away next week @ +150K miles, but the 2015 received it's 10w-40 transfusion a while back. We drive "normal" and could care less about "maybe" loosing 1-2 mpg on a car that already gets better mpg than everything else not plug-in. But don't listen to me...I'm just a Mechanic. What do I know?

 

Any oil usage at 150k?

 

1/4 liter and holding per 5K mile oci at +150K total miles. Not bad considering what happened at 86,510 miles.

For the record, the only reason my 2010 is going bye bye is because I'm taking back the 2015 Prius I allowed my Son to use for College part 2. He has his degree and career now and needs a truck...so I'm allotting that money towards the Tacoma he's buying.

i change my oil once a year. that amounts to 6,000 miles and about 1,000 hv. might be considered severe duty since a lot of it is warm up.

 

Hot/Cold temps and short trips would also be considered severe duty.

 

^ Funny but true: often the less you drive it, the more often you should change the oil.

 

what is the forum's consensus (if there is one) on the best oil filter for the prius?

I make a lot of short trips under three or four miles at a time and I agree. I put on roughly 8500 miles a year which means that I get an oil change twice a year, every six months or 4,250 miles. At 78K miles I have seen absolutely no oil loss at this point in time.

Each dealer is an independent businessman. I would not make generalized claims that all dealers do anything. If they do use Toyota oil, I bet they buy in bulk.

You can request that they use bottle oil. My dealer would and at no extra charge. There service bays are glass in, so I could watch them pour each bottle.

 

Our dealership has bottled liters of Toyota 0W20. I used to purchased bottled from them, then switched over to bulk (the same stuff) maybe 3 years back. Besides being cheaper, I'm no longer dropping off empties at our local motor oil recycler.

My price for bottled liters of Toyota 0W20 (back a few years) was $5.65 (CDN). For quite a while the bulk equivalent was $4.50 per liter, but in the last year it went up to $4.90.

I also get Toyota 5W20 conventional in bulk, for our daughter's Pilot. Last time, it was a jaw-dropping $2.33 per liter...

FWIW, I use Amazon 0W-20 on my 2015 CT200h. I'm an oil snob in the past, using only the finest Mobil 1 euro in my M3s and other BMWs but switched to Amazon for my recent Lexuses.

It has all the modern specs and designations up the wazoo and is really cheap. 10 years ago, this would be a no-go, but lower-tier suppliers have caught up. Check it out

 

The Amazon 0W20 is $22.99 USD for 5 (US) quarts, converts to around $6.48 CDN per liter.

Up here I can get bulk Toyota 0W20 through local dealership, for $4.95 CDN per liter. It was $4.50 per liter for a few years, just went up a bit recently. I bring my own container (a 10 liter gas can).

It has a few advantages: it's cheap, you're not putting motor oil contaminated bottles in the recycle stream, and you're not having jets flying your one or two bottles across the nation.

 

How did I miss this one? Going into the new stash right....now.

 

We get synthetic oil changes at the dealer for our 2010 Prius. Since the service minder comes on every 5,000 miles, and the recommended oil service is every 10,000 miles, should I just reset the service minder?

 

Yes. In the States Toyota says to rotate tires (and "visually" inspect brakes fwiw) every 5k miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.
