I had intermittent engine misfires which would go away itself after sometimes or after car is powered off and on. But few weeks ago I was driving on highway n it started and it kept doing that and engine light came on as well for first time. I parked car for Abt 1 hour and then it was fine no issues at all. Took to mechanic next day he cleared the code to see if it comes back but it didn't but after few days I noticed misfiring again randomly while car was in motion. When on battery it's fine obviously. No engine light came. Took back to mechanic he said he will start off with changing spark plugs n air filter as I didn't get those changes since I bought the car 2 n half a year ago. But after a day of getting those changes it was still misfiring but still no engine light. I added fuel cleaner with full fuel tank and went for a long drive Abt 200 milees and no issues at all infact car ran very smooth. Today after Abt 3 days of using fuel cleaner it started misfiring again. It happens when car is in motion not when I start the car. No engine light still. I mean car runs absolutely fine n smooth but just when misfiring happens i feel bit shaky. Mechanic advised me to try adding 50% super extra fuel along with regular as normally I just put regular. Mechanic tried reading thru machine but nothing came up he said normally it will only show when the engine light comes on but it only came up once only n never after that.
Please advise what could be the issue. Thanks

I have all the same issues and the same exact experiences. Came on here looking for answers also.

    welcome!
    how many miles on her?

have you cleaned the egr circuit?

might be a coil as well.

79K miles. No haven't cleaned age circuit that would be next as per the mechanic but he said only if the light comes on.

First off, some here suggests you need to clean the EGR system end to end if you read enough posts here in PriusChat and I totally agree with that. This means cleaning the EGR cooler, EGR valve, passage pipe, and the intake manifold.

You mentioned car was in motion, was the engine misfiring under light load or partial throttle cruising speed? Cause can be:
    1) a clogged EGR system. The EGR system is to bring in exhaust gas (inert gas) to cool down the lean burning condition of partial/light throttle to reduce NOx. If the EGR system is clogged or the EGR valve is stuck closed due to carbon buildup, without exhaust gas presence when the system expects them there, you may have pre-ignition, pinging, misfires etc
    2) carbon buildup in combustion chambers, like piston top, intake valves, fuel injectors. These can cause incomplete burns and misfiring, increased compression ratio etc. Do you use high quality gas?
    3) @bisco mentioned, bad ignition coil? Properly measuring the coils to make sure they are within specs and in working conditions before throwing money into parts.

Anyone wants to add reason # 4, 5, and etc?:p

I think you got it covered;).

And not covered in carbon buildup either :).

We’ll save that for the next meetup with the pressure washer(y).

    Thanks for detailed message.
    Car was under light load.
I used fuel cleaner n car ran extra smooth for several days but then one night last week I went locally n I was literally driving at 30-40 mph n it started misfiring again. Came back home n next morning n 3 days after that have been driving n no issue at all I put high supreme in there as well few days ago as my mechanic suggested
Yesterday I was driving locally again n got the engine light but no misfiring yet so very weird. I'm gonna take it to mechanic again so he can check with computer what code is it showing now.

I'll be pressure washing my house in the next week or two so I'll get a chance to test it out
on my spare egr cooler after filling it with oven cleaner!

Save the oven cleaner and see how easy it is(y).

Well, I thought about doing that. But if it doesn't clean it good enough. I'll have to let it dry,
    then use the oven cleaner.
Maybe I'll do it before I start the house. So if it doesn't do so well, it will have time to dry in the sun.
Then I can clean again after cleaning the house...
I have a bore scope and figured out how to use the LIGHT.... So I'll try to remember to take
    before and after photos...

Ray I do think my Prius has more carbon buildups than I would hope to see, one of these days I will open up the EGR pipe to take a look.

Before, quite often my 9 mile commute is in stop and go traffic with incomplete warm ups (lack of Italian tuneups LOL). Leaving office to go off site is also in traffic although it becomes a 16 mile slow and go traffic. Nowadays I have to drive in high/full throttle up hills that may blow oil through PCV valve and into my oil catch can (too much of that Italian flavor now:ROFLMAO:).

Please keep us updated with anything your mechanic finds and suggests. Definitely something is there as the misfiring and engine light keeps coming back.

The only issue i've experienced with a clogged EGR is "pinging" (rattling sound) under light acceleration; never any sort of mis-fire that would cause vibration (only had that with bad spark plugs or vacuum leak).

Just a humble guess but I've heard that a bad ignition coil could cause intermittent misfiring issues like this? Maybe one of the coils is developing a short-circuit and randomly fails to produce high voltage sometimes?

So I went to Toyota and it is carbon build up in EGR so took back to local mechanic and he opened it up but EGR valve wasn't that bad just little dirt and also intake manifold wasn't bad. He said he has seen worse than these so I doubt that's the cause. Sure enough i got misfire again after few hours n engine light came up. But very next day car was running fine n engine light went away again itself. Mechanic is saying it could be EGR valve motor so replace that. But I read that if it's EGR then it should misfire when car is idle n engine is cold but it has done that few times so I'm not sure if it's EGR but as per machine that detects issue it says something is stuck in EGR.

    Please advise

Did he clean the EGR COOLER??????
That is what really clogs. Then you'll get excess back pressure causing the head gasket to blow.
Did he check for a leaking head gasket too?

If it was bad coils it would be misfiring all the time so I don't think it's the coil?

You're cherry-picking what answers appeal to you, lol. You need to clean the full EGR circuit and intake manifold, asap. And test for head gasket already failing, leak-down test and check the coolant for carbon monoxide.

Or just keep driving till the head gasket blows, and/or a piston arm is bent. Then your "local mechanic" can put in a new engine.

EGR Valve was all cleaned up even though it wasnt dirty at all hence manifold intake wasnt cleaned since egr wasnt dirty at all.
it's not gasket issue it was already tested. car runs absolutely fine its just when this happens it misfires.

maybe a coil can work intermittently? idk
