On a different note, some kind soul has attempted to have a go at trying to steal my cat again, I took the car to Toyota for a service and MOT, but said to them there was a noise from underneath the car, upon closer examination it seems like someone has tried again to steal it, but without success. So the tilt alarm, security marking, additional bracing around exposed areas, cat loc and welded manifold bolts have stopped it from being stolen, but they have damaged the cat loc now, hence the additional rattling and noise.

I’m still angry as I believe the car was targeted when I was visiting my Mum in hospital, as it seems a common place for these bastards (sorry for swearing) to pounce on the cars. I’ve cancelled my
Service plan and getting rid of it in March next year, I’ve had enough.

Appalling! This is why we can no longer have good things in the UK.
One of the most reliable vehicles on this mothball of a backwater planet, being hounded to extinction by.......brazen criminals, and cynically aided by a virtually toothless law enforcement agency who no longer have the resources to fight this kind of crime in the 21st century.

And they still manage to get major facts wrong!

Lots of free article material and true stories on PC they could have publicised.....but I guess that was too much to research.....

It has been a while since I last read this post - mainly due to the anger it made me feel knowing that there are scumbags out there that would steal a catalytic converter and have nothing to worry about in terms of repercussions.

It was about 3 months ago I had to make the difficult decision to either live in fear of it happening again or get rid of the car. What made my decision to get rid of the car easier was the fact that some lovely chaps stole my step father’s catalytic converter from his driveway during the day and just to add insult to injury, someone stole my brothers catalytic converter from his Auris a few weeks later!

I was absolutely livid about having to give my amazing car up so that I don’t have to continue to worry when I cannot see my car.

Have many of you decided to keep the car or swap it out for something else?

I had to reluctantly relinquish my beloved (and in perfect condition) Gen 1 Prius earlier this year. I've had four cars since then and none of them come close to my 19 year old Prius. Not in comfort, reliability, and on my pocket.

I have been in touch with the new owner, who has now had the Cat stolen from it again. From a Sainsbury's car park in broad daylight. That would have been me if I had kept it.

There are no positives from this sorry mess. Okay I don't have to worry about parking my crappy car anywhere I like these days, but that is scant reward for having t give up my beloved car.

I took a taxi a few weeks ago. A 15 plate Prius it was. Gorgeous car. We got talking, and it turns out he had his Cat stolen back in August.

So frustrating that nothing is happening to stop this.

 

Anything, as long as it isn't Hybrid. I did look at Hyundai Tucson, but they've had their Catalytic Converters stolen as well, although not as commonly as Hybrid cars. Tesla would be nice, although not in my price range. Have been looking at Seat Leon Estates, I really want a Corolla estate but unless I'm corrected, they're hybrid only.

Toyota have said to me its so common now that a lot of people are trading in their cars and leaving the brand, the woman said she doesn't blame me for wanting rid of the car. Having it attacked in a hospital car park is the lowest of the low. Thankfully they didn't get it but the catloc has been damaged in some way, parts of it are now loose and can't be tightened up, well that's what the mechanic said. I'll have a look underneath for myself and see what I can do.

 

Well he claimed to have installed the compatible o2 sensor mate, like an original one from Toyota. But if that was the case, the engine warning light would’ve disappeared right! My fuel consumption has taken a hammering since this fiasco

 

you would like to think so! I believe Denso is the genuine brand, only way is having a look and see what's on there. My fuel consumption has dropped by 5mpg since I had the cat stolen, that's with a genuine cat refitted.

 

I’m going to “go to town” with this garage until I have some piece of mind on my Prius! I love my car as it’s a TSpirit with all the modern toys! And couldn’t bear to part with it as a result of the wretched actions of some two-bit CAT thieves!

 

Could it be that the catalyst is not working ?

In my opinion, the only reason that converters would be stolen so often, is that it can be easily converted to cash.
By stealing a converter, you get cash, and you create a demand for the product.

In the US, with copper being expensive, there was a rash in home break-ins where the thief would rip open the walls and steal the copper pipes, and wiring. Now days, when you go to sell scrap, the scrap yard will take your picture, take a picture of your vehicle, ask for an explanation on where the material was obtained. In Arkansas they are required to take your fingerprints, and to keep the information for one year.The information is subject to inspection by state authorities.

That put a dent in copper theft.

Sounds to me like the uk needs to get involved with the resale market of catalytic converters.
They need to put a face and a name with the resales.

 

Went yesterday to Starcity Birmingham for a movie. Came out and the catalytic converter gone from my 2008 Prius. They stole from atleast 3 Toyota hybrid car wihtin an hour. Really gutted. Tomorrow will see if can get a after market supply and fitted from a decent garage. Really gutted.

 

Sorry to heat that, it's so frustrating that this is still happening, with nothing being done about it. Just make sure that whatever you replace it with that you get it security marked and some additional protection on there, just in case.

 

I know exactly how you feel. Sorry you got burgled. I had my CAT stolen about 13 months to the day. It’s shocking that 13 months after mine was stolen, they’re still enjoying the freedom to plunder 2nd gen model Prius cars at will, causing immense pain and inconvenience, if not worse.

And they’re still laughing all the way to the bank!
This is infinitely depressing .

I know the feeling of having a Prius vandalized. Here on this side of the pond it can be a 3 4 or even 5x loose situation.
First lose is the actual vandalism. Second is the insurance, sure insurance will usually compensate for some of the damage, if lucky. Third is repair, and that can turn into a nightmare really quickly. Forth is the new carfax for the car. Fifth is the updated resale value.

Hopefully the Prius will still drive without the cat and only a few dash lights lite, Loud enough for everyone that passes by to know it had it's cat stolen.

 

Unfortunately, it’s not legal to drive any Prius without its catalytic converter in the UK. You can get pulled over and heavily fined.

I figured as much. And I also figured that in the UK the authorities might not be sympathetic even with proof of the vandalism and fine the owner anyway.
