Drove from Burbank Airport to work in Pasadena this morning. Was 44 degrees outside. Even though I had 16 miles of electric range left and was in EV mode, the car immediately fired up the ICE when I turned on the front defroster in the parking lot. Turned off the defroster a few minutes later and the car went to EV mode, but about ten minutes later while driving 65 MPH down the freeway the ICE turned back on for about six miles before going back to EV mode. I assume that's normal in cold temps? We rarely see weather this cold in Los Angeles lol
Using the MAX defrost will do that. Using the regular window blower doesn't, the engine stays off. That's what I use most of the winter here in Minnesota.
Wow I'd be happy to call 44 F cold. Try putting a minus in front of that. Yes the ICE will turn on and run until it achieves its operating temperature. This helps produce max heat on the windshield which is very helpful when you need to scrap ice and snow off. The heat pump running off the traction battery has a low temperature limit where it is ineffective.
We went over the grapevine today and it was 37 F and the Tejon Summit. No Prime this trip though, the wife wanted the RX450H so I couldn’t tell you the overall effect experienced . But we got some good shots of the snow capped mountains around LA and the surrounding area.
It is 15°F degrees. Below that, the engine will start. Above that, you can drive all-electric with heat.
I agree. As far as I remember previously living there, by this time its just packs overnight rain filling up snow in the San Bernardino mountains. So obviously It wasn't 44 degrees like today, Weather pattern changes. I was stunned seeing the "browned hills" in thousand oaks when I drove there 5 years ago. I have a picture of that area that I took back in 1986 and it was all green. I remember its use to rain almost the whole month of February gearing up for a beautiful spring time. Hopefully these are getting better again. Kind of miss those day but I live in the northwest now and sort of speak, your temperature of 44 deg this morning is not that far from us here which is 39-40 at dusk.
Beautiful Baby! Looks like perfect time for you to ski. That's gotta be atleast powder up to the knees. ... Driving towards the grapevine can be a stiff road. I see a lot of cars get stuck there on mid summer or black ice winter.
Knees? Or just ankles? I'm not taking my rock skis on that. Never mind the skis, the severe rock grabs will cause nasty face plants onto other rocks. 22F on my porch this morning. Forget to put the freeze covers on the hose bibs, so will have to get that done today.
It's actually around 13 degrees, but I've seen it keep working down to 12 degrees. On one cold 9 degree F morning I drove to work with the heat off to see what would happen. I was able to make it in EV mode the whole way. The battery was pre-heated from charging, but if the battery gets cold (like from sitting unplugged overnight well below freezing) the engine is more likely to run.
Went through something like that too. Realized instead of hitting defrost button, you can touch the dual air flow to windshield and lower vent button on the touchscreen and turn up the heat. The ice stays off while the windshield defrosts. By the way, since you're bragging, it's cute how you think Pasadena and Burbank are LA
If you live in Southern California, then you would tend to distinguish the various regions. Not so much if you live elsewhere. Similarly, for those of us in Northern California, we distinguish very sharply between the city of San Francisco, the Peninsula, East Bay, and South Bay (like San Jose).
So? I commonly refer to Seattle, even though I'm farther away from Seattle than he is from LA. For a nationwide or worldwide forum, that is plenty close enough, and more meaningful to distant folks not familiar with local minutia.
