Scoring on rotors

    I have 64000km in the 2017 Prius
    And my front brakes look like crap
    The front of each rotor is full of small groves and the rear side of front rotor has much larger deeper grooves I can notice without disassembling.

    that said I’m going to pick up new rotors shims and pads and do a brake service with intention to lube all pins and possibly replace everything upon inspection.

    Is there anything I should know about other then disconnection the 12V battery?
    I’m hoping the pistons are push in and not screw style. ??? Let me know anything I should know pls ??? I have done 4 breaks jobs ever with no issues but never a hybrid

    Disconnect 12 volt negative before starting, and when done, before reconnecting, pump brake pedal a few times to take out any excess travel.

    When pushing in the pads use something (old brake pad, plywood, steel plate) to spread the load evenly over the piston rim: it's some high-tech plastic, can crack.

    Only rear brakes are screw-in caliper pistons, due to integrated parking brake. Do be careful with orientattion of that piston. It's imperative to have piston orientation per pic in Repair Manual, so pin on back of brake pad fits between "spokes" on the piston face (see attached).

    I think you probably are about to waste a LOT of time and money.
    Some "rippling" of the rotors is quite normal and depends mostly on the construction of the pads used.
    Deep gouges, of course, are not normal.
    But it seems like a LOT of people can't tell the difference.

    Have you ever done a complete brake job on a system with ABS and traction control before ?
    The fluid probably should be replaced too while you are at it.

    I listen. I’m the guy who listens. Would this issue make a noise when braking, esp slowing down to a stop? Mine has been making a clicking sound from 20 - 0 mph. I can hear this when the drivers side window is down, sounds like the front axle. I had not thought about the brakes. But will ask my Toyota advisor next service

    "Clicking" does not normally come from the brakes.
    More likely that there is a big rock in the tire tread.......or a nail stuck in one.
    Might NOT want to wait for the next scheduled service to check it out.

    Don't know if any of the Prius models have "real" hubcaps or not......but a rock stuck behind a hubcap can do that too.

    My 4 touring has 17” alloys w partial wheel covers. Weird design.

    I have don’t quite a few break jobs, the scoring is not normal. However I have decided to wait for 3 reasons overall braking performance is smooth, even tho the inner pads are way lower and more worn out where the gouges are and a lot more rotor rust present.
    - hate doing brake jobs in the winter cold garage
    - the dealer doesn’t have any brakes pars in stock across Canada... something with Thor warehouse supply. Been on order for 1 month now.

    Tucatz that clicking noise is the front axle. I had mine in the shop 7 times before they listen and replaced the driver's side axle. It cause low speed clicking. On mine the noise would stop for a day or two every time it was lifted which made finding it a challenge. You can also find others here who have had the same clicking issues at low speed.

    I changed all the front rotors and pads
    On a 2017 Prius this was surprising.
    This is 2 winters in Ontario plus this one coming.
    The inside pads both wore out way more One metal on metal
    The outside pads also not even
    The pins where not seized but not moving freely. Moving forward after or before every winter I’m going to service them when I change my tires over. Never seen shittier brakes. At 60k

    They've really got to get in gear regarding this insane amount of salt dumped on the road. There are alternatives that are less harmful to cars, and the environment.

    I think too, regulations are restricting metal coatings, the cars' suspensions, frames, all the bolts, are rusting like crazy. I find boiled linseed oil (brushed on) good for that.

    Yes we talked about the lot before.
    I use a würth product I baught it 15 years ago cost $100 for a jug it works wonders
    It’s to cold to start rust proofing now.

    Surprisingly cold on west coast right now too, -1 C right now. Yeah I know, shirt sleeve weather for you. I just can't take it. I did an oil change and tire rotation on our daughter's Pilot yesterday, and as usual she shows up around 4 PM, so I'm working as it really starts to get cool down and dark. Ugh.

    Did it at least have oil in the sump;).

    But I’ll probably be in the same spot as my kids get old enough to drive:cool:.

    Situational awareness is something not a lot have(y).

    Yeah it was in decent shape, I've been keeping on it, topping it up. One tire was down to about zero pounds pressure though. The TPMS alerted, and showed which corner it was (this is a 2010). Can see the likely suspect (screw head showing in the tread, been there a while), chalk-marked the sidewall and left it in the tread, aired it up with (with bicycle pump) and made her promise to drop by Kal Tire for a kosher inside/outside plug repair. She's semi-diligent about that. I hope...

    While I working on the brakes my dad showed up, and sees me working. Then he goes to parts tire and picks up a aftermarket set of raybestos pads. So I did a service on his popped out the old ones still lots of meat left but uneven wear from 1.5mm to 3mm
    To do a service, clean, lube all pins and clips only took 20-30min per side.
    raybesto pads feel fantastic no different from dealer. (But time will tell) for what’s it’s worth $89 for front set is cheap for premium set.

    for the rear I only have that cheap tool for threading the piston. May invest in a better one.

    last 10 years I have not been doing mechanical work myself and went to mechanic for everything but no matter how much the dealer charges they seem to do things sloppy. Overfill oil. Not torque anything they touch. (Not that I torque everything myself) but dealer should.
    they did one break service at about 30k the pins should never have been this seized.
