What kind of MPG should I see? Prius v five. 17" wheels

2013 Prius v Five
85k miles (80% hwy/20% city)
36.7 mpg lifetime
Granted, highway miles don't help my mpg, but I've not been impressed with my Barcelona red "v" mpgs since I drove it home on day one. I've run Michelin Primacy tires the past 50k miles, since the OEM tires pooped out around 35k. I drive 70-75 mph on the highway and have the tires at 42 psi front and 40 psi rear.

 

We've seen in the range of 40-42 mpg with our 2012 v Five at 42F/40R psi, and 40.6 mpg lifetime, on a mix of 30% 70-75 mph on I-95 and 70% local/city driving.

 

My 2013 v averaged 42.5mpg on recent trip to Helen Ga. calculated from actual fill ups divided into miles driven, dash guestimator said 45mpg, Wifey's 2016 ECO gets 63.5 on the guestimator, shucks sometimes we feel guilty we aren't paying our fare share of road use taxes...NOT

 

I always say "PISSOFF OPEC, SLOW DOWN" today's driving local and back roads up to 65 mph and guesstimator is saying 48,5mpg so probably 46 mpg actual, 16" Continental Pro Contact 40/35 psi.

 

You’re right. Slowing down = higher mpgs.
My 36mpg lifetime is still better than I’d get in a comparably roomy CRV, RAV4, or Forester.
One of my favorite v stories is when I fit a new 50 gallon water heater, still in the box, in the back of my v. The look on the warehouse guys face when I closed the rear hatch was priceless.

 

Best highway out of a Ford Focus was 38 mpg @ 55 mph over a 100 mile drive, drove my old 08 gen 2 to 55mpg @ 55mph running 1000 lbs overloaded from Miami to New Smyrna. Had picked up new batteries for the Solar Backup sys.

Yea, I love being able to carry that occasional 8 foot 2x4 or molding/trim inside the car. So much room in my mini - 'v'an.

 

I bought a 2012 v series 5 with 17" wheels about a month ago after hitting a deer in my 2001 Volvo S60 2.4T. The Volvo ran
between 21-25 mpg running around Cincinnati, the v around 38 so far. My wife's gen 2 is running about 40, which was about
5 mpg lower than before we put the Goodyear Assurance All Weather tires on it. But she loves the better traction compared
to the OEM. Those made her pretty nervous in the rain.

 

I see posts on this site from people averaging 44-45 mpg and more and I don't understand how there can be such a big difference in my fuel economy. I have a 2013 Prius V 5 with 49000 miles. Around town with very conservative driving style I can get around 40-42mpg. The digital mileage gauge almost always is 1-2mpg higher than actual measured mpg. The problem is highway miles drop considerably to around 35 to 38mpg which seems low to me. Some of my highway driving contains hilly terrain. I carry 40 lbs air pressure in all tires and normally do not run any faster than about 70-74mph. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

 

I have owned a 2006 Gen 2 since new and currently a 2014 Prius v since new. Having said that, we currently get about 50mpg calculated and about 53mpg on the gauge. Driving is freeway/urban/suburban in the range of 30/5/65, speeds up to 75mph. Relatively flat with the exception of overpass/on/off ramps.

Tires are Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 from Costco on OEM wheels, air pressure set at 44psi front/42psi rears. Currently, approx, 70k on the odometer. While I don't work hard at obtaining the best mileage, I also don't abuse the car. After driving two generations of Prius over the course of 13 years, you learn to drive it fairly intuitively for best mileage.

 

12 v Five w/ ATP, standard 42-44 lifetime. Who cares though, we're still getting twice the miles of most people

 

I'm averaging 47 on the guesstimator, 106k on the odo, EGR cleaned, all fluids replaced, hotter burning spark plugs, quantum solenoid, oil changes every 5k, 225/50/17 michelin energy savers, I drive in normal mode. I do about 50/50 driving in southern california and I don't drive slow or try to hyper mile every chance I get. The quantum solenoid I think has a big part in this.

 

Honest 40 for 2 yr average. 35-37 in winter, 44-46 in summer. A lot depends on temp., distance traveled and speed.

 

Drive about 50/50 and average in the 38.7 to 39.6 range over the year-Car has 158K on it at this time. - Just replaced the hybrid battery about one month ago.

 

How long have you had the Quantum Solenoid installed?

I just installed mine this morning. Has it affected your fuel economy at all?

 

I had to replace my hot water heater last winter. Went to Lowes to pick up a new 44 gallon hot water heater, plus a couple slabs of wood. As you can see by the photo, I still had plenty or room left over and I didn't even load the water heater on its side. There was a guy packing up his work truck who was parked next to me. The look on his face when was priceless and even he said.."I'm surprised how well that fit"

Anyway, so far according to Fuelly, which I've been using since June of this year. My overall average has been 47.1 MPG. Its been getting lower lately due to the cold weather. We've been experiencing weather between the teens to upper 20s. And my work commute has changed. I use to travel 550+ miles a week just prior to June and I was averaging between 49-50 mpg on a full tank and getting about 490-500 miles. Now my new work commutes is a little under 300 miles a week but now my drive involves a little more uphill driving. I get around 40-44mpg on my way to work and over 50+mpg on my way home.
