I was using external TPMS (which replaces the regular valve stem cap) on my son's car during winter. In a very short period, they seized on the stem thread and forced to remove them destroyed the external TPMS. I guess I could have saved the external TPMS if I destroyed the stem, but that would be more problematic and costly with four flat tires. I think road salt does accelerate the process of electrolysis. If you drive in salted roads, it is best to use plastic caps. Or make sure to lube the thread of the stem, like I do now with my external TPMS sensors on my winter wheels which has no internal TPMS sensors. I use dubs of silicone lube and it seems to be working.
