I just took delivery of my 2006 Package 7 Prius 1 month ago. :D

Today the smart key has quit functioning. I can not lock the doors. I can't use the the remote to unlock/lock the doors. When I get out of the car, there is a steady beep and then there is three beeps. The key is in my pocket. It appears that the car thinks that the key is still inside. When I manually lock the doors with the power lock swithch, they will stay locked for about 3 seconds and then unlock when the last door is shut.

I've tried using my wife's remote and I get the same problem. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I going to have to take a trip to the dealer?

    Thanks for you help!

    Robert

Just double checking, but the ready light is out, right? You mentioned using your wife's key so you've probably already thought of this, but make sure there no other keyfobs in the car. (I don't think you get more than two keyfobs with a Prius.)

Did you leave anything plugged in one of the power outlets? I had a similar issue a few weeks ago. Unplugging a 12v charger from the outlet solved it. Make sure that the car is turned off afterward.

I found that the SKS loses its mind when you use the lock button on the door. Try locking, then unlocking the door using the door lock button, just out of curiosity - it's remotely possible that it thinks that's what it wants.(?)

What you're describing seems to be that you left the car on.

The long beep is the "inside" beep which means you probably didn't put the car in Park. When you close the door, the 3 beeps means the key is outside the car or the car can't detect the key inside the car. The remote obviously won't work cause the car is still on and the car unlocks itself if the car is still on and you try to lock it.

The Ready light is off. The car is off. The dash is off except for a yellow key light. I keep my mobile phone in the center arm rest console plugged in to the 12v outlet. The phone stays on but it's not charging when I turn the car off. It was raining yesterday morning when it first happened. I initially thought that it had something to do with the door handle being wet. But it cleared up in the afternoon and I had the same problem. It appears that the only way to lock and unlock the doors is to use the metal backup key. Strange huh?

    Thanks for your replies.

    Try unplugging the phone.

My identical problem cleared when I unplugged the portable DVD charger from the console power outlet; the charger was not even connected the DVD player when the car acted up.

hmm, yes tis strange. Do you keep a spare remote in the car?
Also, try IsrAmeriPrius' suggestion of unplugging the phone. Something is interfering with the electronics causing the car to think it's on and the smart key is out of the interior of the car even though the car is off.

I occassionally get one long beep when I try to lock the door with the button on the outside of the handle. I think I have figured out that the fob is too close to the car and the car thinks it is inside. I move the fob to my other hand, further away from the car and it locks with no problem.
