Bizarre request from my Toyota dealership

    I got a message today at work from the "Shop Foreman" of the Toyota dealership where I bought and service my 2005 Prius. He said something along the lines of "California wants us to send back some of the parts we put in your Prius." When I called him back, he said that they wanted them to send back some emergency brake part they put in my car a year ago when I was having trouble with the e-brake light staying on all the time even when the brake was disengaged, and I think some other part. He said he had never been asked to do this before, and muttered that it might have something to do with "because it's a Prius."

    Has anyone ever heard of anything like this at all? He made an appointment for me to bring it on Tuesday, and was very quick to offer to give me a rental car while it's in the shop. I am just a bit concerned that there is really something more serious behind this, as I have never heard of a shop taking parts back out of the car to send them somewhere for some unknown reason. The shop foreman assured me the car is safe to drive.

    My car has around 15,000 miles and I have had all the relevant recalls done. Any thoughts? I'm a little bit concerned about this... :unsure:

    I'll let you know whatever I find out. However, I suspect I'm just going to bring in the car and get it back a day later with, at best, a short description of what they replaced. I'm not sure I'll ever find out the real reason they needed some of those parts back...

    um, that's fishy. distrbingly so.

    toyota wants the failed parts back, not the good parts that were used to replace the failed parts...

    call up the customer service number. or ask the dealer to provide you a number for you to call to verify the situation. you want to know exactly why and who is asking and everything. every detail.

    edit: actually, we would recommend not going in until you verify what's going on.

    There was an issue with 2000 MY Honda Odysseys and their door latches. After a trio of recalls, they wanted some of the customers who got their door latches replaced early on to bring the vans back so they could replace the latches again, just to be sure.

    I guess there was some quality control issue with how the supposed-good latches were assembled. Peace of mind, maybe?

    No way I'd hand the car over with that kind of vague request. How can they justify the inconvenience to you, if nothing else? This makes no sense at all. Please get back to the service guy who contacted you and let him know that you'd like to know *exactly* what the hell is going on before you bring the car in.

    Did they put some faulty part in your car that they desperately want back out?
    Did they mistakenly put a 24k gold-plated part in there instead of the plastic one?
    Do you live in Bermuda?

    All too crazy!

    :eek: :eek: One more vote to DEMAND FULL DETAILS. Specifics: Exactly what parts. Written verification from Toyota direct to you. Full reasons for the request. This sounds suspicious to me.

    Alternative: Swap you even for a new Prius, same specifications and options as you have now, then do whatever they wish with yours.

    LOL. I thought about the gold part as well. :) I'll call on Monday to find out the exact details. However, the way I see it, either they screwed something up or some part is faulty. In either case, I'd want to get it fixed, so, apart from the inconvenience, what would be the down side to bringing the car to the dealer? Naturally, I would like to know what they did, but either way it would still need to be corrected.

    I'm just curious, because I've been pondering it and I'm not sure if there is some huge downside to bringing the car in that I am overlooking.

    I called today and spoke with the shop foreman again. He said they are going to replace the emergency brake pedal assembly with switch. I had the car in a year ago to get that done, because I was having a problem with the emergency brake light staying on even when disengaged. A year later, "they" called for the parts to be sent back to California.

    He didn't really have more information. I asked him if perhaps they discovered that part has a potential to fail and wanted to get it back, and he thought that might be the case, but said they didn't tell him anything more than that they need it back.

    At least now I know what will be done, though I wonder if this might be a precursor to a future recall on the emergency brake assembly?

    still doesn't make sense. sounds like he told you the same thing you posted in the original post, worded a little differently. there are no serial numbers on parts, and no way of tracking if one defective part was made where it is and what car it's in so that's not the case. further, california doesn't just have dealers call up customers and ask for parts out of their cars. something's still sounding suspicious. maybe the dealer's trying to cover their own butt for something shady? who knows.

    i'd ask to talk to "them" in california to get the straight story.

    Could this have anything to do with the brake light recall? Maybe they put the wrong part in by mistake, and increased your risk and their liability.

    I'm not sure if I remember hearing about a brake light recall. I got all the TSBs that were relevant to my car taken care of, but perhaps you're onto something here.

    At this point, I just want to get the silly thing fixed. I now know what they are going to do, so even if the reasons behind it are a little bit suspicious, it'll still fix whatever the problem is, and I get a brand new emergency brake assembly out of it, all for a bit of inconvenience. While not ideal, I guess it'll do.

    The request does sound kind of weird, but as an engineer for a Japanese firm (in the US), I actually think it is pretty normal, for engineers back in Japan, to request the US counterparts (US engineers, technicians, customers) to furnish more tangiable, physical evidence, so the guys in Japan needn't try to duplicate the problems or make any assumptions. It's simply good engineering, but probably awful marketing. And we all know, Japanese are not the smoothest marketers out there. They haven't call hybrid a "Real American Revolution" yet. Imagine what Ford, GM and DC would call their hybrid if they ever get serious with it.

    If I am in your shoes, I would ask the tech to put me in touch with the Toyota engineers who made the request, so I can better understand what their interest is in your car/parts. Moreover, it's a great way to get to know Toyota and what's coming. Just like the guy in CA who Honda invited to test the fuel cell Civic. He was invited becasue he gave Honda a lot of feedback, and of all the American Honda drivers, he was the one chosen to drive the fuel cell Civic. Wouldn't you want to be the test driver/case study for the new plugin Prius?
