I Just Needed an Oil Change, but did I Rooked?

    If you go to ebay and search for Prius filters you can usually find them in a 4 or 5 pack for about $5 a piece.
    Then you can use Toyota filters.

    Can’t speak to Oregon laws, but as a rule, you don’t pay for what you did not agree to. Courts don’t necessarily honor contract terms buried in the boilerplate language.

    If you went in for an oil change and they did anything more, you don’t pay for it. They have no duty to fix something you didn’t authorize. If their oil change was “X dollars plus labor” that would be your responsibility, but most times they price the job to include labor.

    FYI, if your attachment is correct, I don’t see your signature on that authorization page...meaning they had nothing to force you to agree to their terms. You can also line out terms you don’t agree to and initial those lines before signing.

    I just did my first OC on my wonderful '05-G2. Rather easy outside of that that last OC was done by Gadzooki at Toyota. Everything was screwed in with a power-ratchet. Damn ... I really hate that. ... The operation took +/- 20-minutes; +/- $50 including the $1.26 I paid for the new drain plug that I bought only for the fact that it was $1.26.

    Hey y'all, sorry for disappearing!

    I've moved to NY, and had my car inspected again. Turns out yes, they not only used cheap oil, but it was also diluted somehow? I'm not sure how that works, but the mechanic here seemed pretty alarmed when he saw the oil. The oil cover was tightened so much and that the mechanic had to use some kind of special tool to dislodge it. He didn't charge me to do the new change and taught me how to do my own changes in the future.

    I also forgot to mention that they broke my glove compartment too. When you pull the lever, it just drops, there's no resistance anymore. It's minor, but I'll still have to look into how to fix that at some point. :/


    Looking back, I really regret not calling them on the Terms of Service thing, but I've learned from the experience.

    Needless to say, I do my own oil changes now.

    LOL! There's a sucker born every minute. Your oil wasn't diluted...that never actually happens. Your car requires synthetic oil. It is different than regular car oil, but not diluted. You really need to google this basic info.

    Your glove compartment probably isn't broken either. The piston needs to be properly reinstalled. It is a two minute fix. Google the youtube videos.

    You need a new mechanic to replace your new mechanic!

    I admit my original post may have come off more negative than I meant it to. I was not in a good place in my life, and things have certainly improved in every aspect on that front, at least. I will not share the name of the shop, because I was never looking to drag their name to begin with. I needed help understanding the situation I was in and how to move forward for the future.

    I apologise that I seem ignorant about these kinds of things, but that's because I am. I'm here because I accept that I'm unsure how Prius work, and need a good place to learn and grow as a hobbyist.

    There are many, many sources online that are just plain incorrect. That's why I'm here. A group of people sharing ideas, is better than one YouTube video that may be completely inaccurate.

    When someone becomes familiar with a hobby or job, it can be very easy to take that knowledge for granted. It's important to remember that when accepting the responsibility of teaching people, there are no stupid questions. Patience is extremely important, and empathy is an absolutely must for a healthy learning experience for the student. Being met with a lot of harsh criticism can turn away future hobbyists, and that's unfortunate. (We as Prius drivers don't need more reasons for people to think we're stuck up. :b )


    You can never know what struggles a person is dealing with in their lives, so already choose to be kind to one another. On the road and online.

    Also remember, this is text based. EXTREMELY hard to know if someone is being, happy, sad, mad, upset,
    or any other emotion. Adding a smiley face or other icon helps. But who knows what mood you are in from text?
    There are some here that seem to be negative almost everytime. It's sad. But you just take it with a grain of salt.

    Try your best to ignore those posts. As you said, you are here to learn. Learn from the ones that actually help you.
    Everyone on here had to learn about the Prius. And learning from experience is the best because you will make
    mistake, but usually don't do it again. And many on here are willing to help you with info so you don't have to go
    through what we went through.

    I'm thinking about doing this too, but I'm curious. How do you document a DIY oil change for warranty? Do you annotate it in the warranty book and then later get the dealer to stamp it when they do scheduled maintenance?

    Keep the receipts. Whether you do it yourself, or have a shop do it.

    I just keep a log, and all the receipts. Note on the receipt what log entry they tie to. Dealership mentioned something like that too, one time when I was in getting stuff. Oh, and most everything I get through dealership, I think that might help. Wouldn't buy spark plugs from though, usually much cheaper at another local automotive store.

    You can actually go onto the Toyota Website and log in your car's ID#. Thats what I have done. So all my work is officially logged in on their website.
