The OEM charging cord which comes with the Prime has three indicator lights. Their functions are explained in the owners manual:

    Prime-Charging-1.JPG

    Prime-Charging-2.JPG

    Prime-Charging-3.JPG

I do not know which light on your device is flashing, but the most likely problem is a ground fault because of the electrical outlet which you're plugged into. The Prime's charging cable's ground fault detection needs to see the same amount of current flowing into and out of the charging cable and also a ground ("earth") connection to the third contact pin.

It could also be due to a poor connection where dirt, corrosion or mechanical damage to the plug or outlet cause electrical resistance which results in enough heat to activate the thermal protection in the plug.

Have you tried plugging into a different outlet on a different circuit?

Are you able to charge your Prime from a public L2 charging station?

This should let you identify whether the problem is with your outlet, the charging cable, or the vehicle.

I just bought a 2020 Prius PHV LE. I can confirm that the OEM 110 charging cable from Toyota will take 240v (dryer outlet). I'm using it now.

My 2018 Prime OEM 110 charging cable from Toyota will take 240v as well.

    Dear Rob and all,
I don't know anything about electricity, but I would really like to be able to charge our new-to-us, 2017 Prius Prime in the 240 outlet that is already in our garage. As far as I can tell, it is a Nema 14-50 outlet. My question is whether it is safest to buy a Duosida Level 2 Nema 14-50P Plug to J1772 EV charging cable or should I buy an adaptor cord like the Epicord someone put in this blog? I want to do the safest thing possible, and I don't care about the cost. Many thanks for your help with this!

    Welcome to PriusChat !

    ***************************

If you want a great adapter, let me build one for you, I use 10 AWG pure copper cord.

It will work perfectly with your Toyota OE EVSE unit, your Prime will charge up in about ~2:28 minutes.

If I make it tonight or tomorrow by mid day, it will go out tomorrow afternoon, you'll get it on Thursday or Friday.

With your parameters, I would buy the manufacturered NEMA 14-50p cable. You can get an adapter that is almost as fast and much cheaper, but it will have NEMA 5-20r outlet on it that LOOKS like a 120 volt device that is actually wired for 240 volts. While rare, that is a safety risk. Rob43 does good work, but it is a risk that uninformed people will plug random 120 bolt equipment in.

Jimbo, thank you for the compliment, but what a perplexing statement...

I say perplexing because you ordered one of my Rob43 Adapters 3 weeks ago.

And I would again, but Annie A says "I want to do the safest thing possible, and I don't care about the cost."

Those were not my priorities, my daughter's household consists of thirty-something night shift nurses. They read warning labels for a career. The phrase "Here, hold my Beer" is not uttered there. There are no children in the dynamic. I can take the risk that someone else can't read, my girls will be safe.

When they want fast charging, (or have multiple EVs) they have your Adapter on hand.

OK, I hear what you're saying, and now understand.

    *************************************************

    Here's my polite retort:

From a safety stand point, I'd put my adapter that uses the Toyota OE (Incredibly well built) EVSE unit at 240 volts up against any Chinese built EVSE unit at 240 volts any day of the week.

The Toyota OE EVSE is internally a masterpiece, the Chinese EVSE unit is internally hollow by comparison with occasional cold* soldering joints. Over time the "Lesser" of two safety evils for me is any adapter & the Toyota OE EVSE running at 240 volts, I sleep great at night knowing that I'm charging up with the Non-Chinese unit.

From a safety standpoint, any 240v adapter can be attached to the Toyota OE EVSE in such a way like shrink wrap or zip ties so no one can separate that connection. Now it's safe.

On the other hand, there's nothing that can be done to prevent the 240v Chinese EVSE unit from having a failure while you're sleeping.

PS, Both of your warning stickers with instructional install picture should have arrived by today.

    * The one I tested.

    @Annie A
if cost is not a factor
    and safety is paramount
FOR a person who knows even less about electricity than you - since you are at least giving a guess about your nema outlet as 14-50P ( I'm sure Rob43 would have you verify the nema outlet to both your satisfactions).

The safest is to buy a dedicated EVSE with the correct plug for your outlet (buyer beware).

I wouldn't expect Rob43 to buy and test all the EVSE's now available online so he can provide detailed specs for each and how they compare to the use of his pigtails with the Primes OEM EVSE.

In my humble opinion Rob43 has gone above and beyond in offering his cables to Priuschat members.

Thanks for your question Annie A. I hope you are happy with our takes on what is right and or the best options for us and anyone else that might have specific questions, that have multiple answers, depending on each individuals point of view.

    Dear Rob,
Yes! I would like you to build an adaptor for my Toyota-provided charging cable. Your pure copper cord adapters seem much safer to me than taking my chances with a Non-Toyota charging cable made in China. After I post this reply, I will upload a photo of our outlet so you can confirm it is a Nema 14-50 outlet. Many thanks to you and all the guys on this chat for your helpful comments and for talking me through this challenge.

    Yep, that's a 14-50.

Your adapter can go out as soon as Monday afternoon, you'll get it this week.

I will send you a private message to get things going.

Yes, every model of Prius Prime (2017, 2018, 2019, & 2020) can charge at 240 volts with the included OE EVSE charging unit. Your charge up time will drop down to 2.5 hours, this is a Big Win !!
