I've read quite a few older posts about people buying the appropriate styrofoam parts and such from different models to upgrade a Prius with no spare tire so that it can carry one of the space saver spare tires. I just purchased a new 2019 Prius Limited, and need to do this, so would like to verify this is still possible with the 2019 Prius Limited? (Sorry if this question is a bit of a duplicate, but since most other posts on this subject are a couple years old, wanted to make sure information in them still applies to a 2019 Prius Limited.)

I use the Prius as a transporter for rescue dogs, so it would be a dangerous situation to get a flat tire with multipe rescue dogs on board and not have the option to change a tire, which is why I am trying to find a way to get a space saver tire properly installed into the "Limited" version which comes only with the goop kit.

Can someone please help with these two questions:

    1) Can I purchase the "styrofoam" and/or other parts used in other current Prius models to hold a space saver spare tire in the Prius Limited? If so, what parts would I need to purchase or please refer me to another prior post that lists parts that would still be current for the 2019 model?

    2) What space save tire do I need to purchase for the 2019 Prius Limited.

    Thanks!

    - Jeff

Rescue dogs in a Prius Limited? They travel in style eh? Although a bit cramped.

You'll have to check if Toyota has a filter to the fan inlet, keep all of the dog hair out of the hv cooling fan and battery. That would potentially leave you stranded if too much hair gets into the cooling fan.

For the spare, if you don't carry passengers much and the rear seat is folded down, you can probably leave the spare tire in back of the front passenger seat.

All great points. We've been using Prius cars for our rescue transporters since the original one came out, so always keep the fan inlet clear and cleaned out regularly.

We are hoping to keep a "mini" spare tire or "space saver" spare or whatever is the best name for it in the usual back compartment where some (but not all) current Prius models have them. The Limited does not have a spare tire back there but some other current Prius models do. I'm hoping we can buy the styrofoam molded parts and other things the other Prius models use for storing a spare tire in the back. Anyone know if this is still possible to do for the 2019 Prius Limited?

Your best bet I think would be a third gen spare tire rim*:

Spare Wheel - Toyota (42611-20841) | Toyota Parts

Plus a tire that meets this spec:

    upload_2019-9-29_8-36-10.png

This looks like a good one:

    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=Y870B&partnum=38MD6YOTEMP

With the prime there's no way it'll stow under the hatch floor, will have to stow behind front seat back as @JC91006 says.

    * Note: 4th Gen has a stock tire and rim that's dimensionally identical to 3rd gen, but uses a 17" temp spare. The 3rd gen's 16" temp spare has an outside diameter that's near-identical to the stock tire, while the 4th gen's 17" temp spare has an outside diameter markedly less. Which is a puzzler. Bottom line, stick with 3rd gen temp spare spec.

I don't have a Prime, I have the "regular" Prius with "Limited" package (larger screen, sunroof, etc.), so should be able to get the foam inserts for the back to hold the spare tire, correct?

Oh geez, I need my coffee.

Yeah I think apart from the AWD models, it's doable. There's several threads here, on how to retrofit the spare, get it below the hatch floor. One recently used parts from another make of car?? Looked good and was "relatively" inexpensive.

I think it's well over a grand (US), to do it completely kosher?

Haven't looked yet since was trying to first find out through this post...

    1) Exactly what size "mini" spare tire is best for 2019 Toyota Limited. (Got one reply above, if anyone else has opinions on this?)
    2) Will the styrofoam, spare tire and other parts from a 2019 Toyota Prius XL (I believe this is the only one in the 2019 line that ships with a spare), will those transfer over to the Prius Limited? Or in other words... can I order those from Toyota Parts then just upgrade my Prius Limited to carrying a mini spare instead of the goop kit.

    Any more thoughts?

I'm looking for the "opposite" of this. The car I just bought comes with this same kit... the foam and such but it has not tire even though it is called a "Spare Tire Kit" just has goop spray.

Hoping someone with an LE which I think is the only one with a spare in the back might want to sell that kit with associated foam, or maybe trade for mine! :)

    Any other suggestions anyone?

Bit of a sand pounder now, that only the base level has a spare, and higher levels "upgrade" to pump-n-slime.

Oh... sorry I didn't offer any help as I am not familiar with Gen 4. :p

But check Craigslist to find a better deal than the dealership, maybe you will find a great price out there. Best of luck to you.(y)

I would be interested in learning more about solving this problem. Thank you to everyone in advance.

I was able to purchase from the dealer the spare tire from the lower end Prius model which includes it, along with the screw to hold it in place. A Prius even without the tire has the place to screw it in. You can then put the top back down on top of it, but it will be a little floppy. I put a WeatherTech liner on it and that keeps it reasonable stable, and also plan to put a few storage containers underneath to help prop up the floor above the tire.

Searched but haven't found it answered:

How are the white, plastic screws, which fasten down the foam in the trunk, removed? These don't seem to unscrew, and I've read in another thread that pulling will strip them. 20200212_083844.jpg

Anyone have a final photo and parts list of what they did to set this up? Seems easy enough once we know what we're looking for. I think there are 15 and 16 inch tires out there. Just trying to make sure I get the right things. thanks!

I went for a full-size spare. I had to build the floor support up around it to put in the factory floor covering. I lost some room, since a full-sized spare is wider (now taller), but I'll feel much more prepared for traveling the country once people are done being afraid of the ChinaVirus.

I bought a spare from a 2018 on eBay for $125. I then used a hot knife to cut the styrofoam to fit the spare

I don't see the tie-down threaded hole on the floor of yours. Am I missing that hole in the picture, or how did you tie it all down?

But then I see your profile shows you owning a 2020 Prius, yet you somehow have an outdated naming nomenclature of 'Two Eco' ... so ... I don't know what is going on. o_O
