I've been taking my wife on short trips lately. She uses the rear cupholder as she reclines. It keeps falling out. I fixed it permanently. If you take it off, there is a tube shaped piece of plastic above the electric oscillator. I drilled into the front armrest compartment and secured the cupholder with a screw, 2 washers, and a locknut. I couldn't find a fix other than a new unit with new clips. Please be careful when you drill. Make sure there are no items in your storage compartment, and be careful around the oscillator because it is expensive.
It can look more professional with screw caps or color match paint. Aesthetics were not priority on this, function was. Plus, I had the hardware in my screw bins. Current cost was zero.
Sorry, I didn't measure. I used a very long screw about 3-4 inches. I assembled and marked the screw because it was too long. I disassembled and cut it with a hacksaw. I may remove it and post the size that I ended up using.
I measured and the screw that worked was 2 -3/4 inches. I used a 10-24 screw and large washers so that the walls wouldn't crack under pressure. I also used a self locking nut that has a plastic collar.
I finally got around to doing this job. Super easy to do. Can’t believe I waited 2 years to finally do this lol. I used a 3 inch screw, and you can see it protrudes just a bit. I didn’t need to hack any of the screw off. It didn’t interfere with my yeti mug at all. I highly recommend this for anyone who likes using that cup holder. Permanent fix!
