PRIME always had a Vehicle Proximity Notification System standard. I thought regular Prius also had that feature don't they? How about Pip from 2012?

Hypothetically, if you never heard any sounds from your pedestrian/proximity alert system, would you pay a dealer $100 minimum to hook your Prime up to techstream to double check if the proximity (noise maker) was actually switched on/off during presale inspection?

    Can you hear it NOW?

For your hypothetical question, my answer is no. I would not pay anyone to check the Proximity system for a fee unless that is required by law during state inspection or something.

That being said, Can you switch off the sound completely? According to the manual, the sound level can be modified in 3 levels by a dealer presumably using Techstream, thus can be done DIY with Carista. Not sure if the default Level 1 is the quietest level, but I think that is the case. My PRIME sound is very low, almost unnoticeable unless you are in a very quiet location trying to just listen to that distinct sound.

Do you mean a loud Vehicle Proximity Notification sound? Or it is just plain loud without the engine on?

Yes, it only sound in EV mode with ICE off and speeds less than 15mph. You can't hear it if you are inside of the car with windows closed. Even with the windows open, somehow it is very hard to hear if you are inside of car driving. The only time I heard it was when my wife was driving and I was standing right in front of the car. There was a video with a sound somewhere. Let me see if I can find it.

EDIT: Oh, wait, you have 2010 Prius. According to @bisco, no you don't have VPNS on your car.

Oh, in that case, my previous comment applies. You may want to change your profile so people know you are a proud owner of Toyota Prius Prime. lol

I'm talking retrospectively about a 2013 Prius, but don't assume your VPNS system isn't working. It's designed to be very non-intrusive, that is to pretty much only be heard outwardly.

Mine was working perfectly as long as I owned the vehicle, but the times I actually heard it while I was behind the wheel were pretty rare.

The easiest or most common time I would hear it was when going through a fast food drive through with my windows rolled down.

Otherwise in most driving scenarios, even slow parking lot situations, inside the car, I wouldn't hear it. But that doesn't mean it wasn't working.

The Prime's must be fairly quiet. I was in a parkade, in an enclosed section where the sound should bounce off the walls and yet all 3 people around the corner didn't hear me.

Not according to the manual. See comment #8. No3 is the dealer only requiring TechStream. I am sure Carista can do it.
