is there a way to disable the current fuel economy indicator?

    Welcome! The short answer is, "Nope." But if you got a Gen 4, that display is amazingly configurable. One of the very first things I did was to ENABLE that display.

    Just out of curiosity, how would that be helpful?

    I too am curious to know why OP wants to disable the display.
