I feel lonely in my new 2019 Limited compared to the crazy party it was in the gen 2 forum when I bought my 2009.

anyone think it’s possible to do a Prius prime tail light conversion on gen 4 to non prime without too much work to body?

I just love the Prime rear end..

No - it's too different. Check the profile of the back and the hatch. Unless you've got unlimited $$$.

There was a massive discussion on Gen 4 from about 6 months before it arrived and ongoing for a year or 2. Pretty well everything was said back then - we're all waiting for the Gen 5 which will start the excitement again.

Speaking of light conversions, irritated that the top trim level Limited on the 2019 in the US doesn't have the fogs or accent lights. Every other country on the planet gets them but the extra tiny bit of electricity pushes the Limited with the 17" wheels just under the EPA rating for all the other trim levels without the 17" wheels.

So I've spent $850 on factory parts to do the entire conversion. I might have to spend another $150 on the steering column stalk controls to get the fog switch if the fogs aren't already on by default when the low beams are on.

The TOYOTA fog lights are useless anyway.

A proper FOG beam needs to be like this:

But PRIUS "fog" lights spray light everywhere and are worse than useless in fog - a flood beam:

And when there isn't fog, some drivers put them on just to annoy other drivers, but being unfocussed down, they just emit glare..

The foglights in my 2017 seem to be aimed very low, the beam doesn't go any further than 2 or 3 feet. I personally find them useful, at least in the fact that since they are lower they make it easier for others to spot my car in fog.

On my third gen, I can barely discern a difference when I turn them on and off. Typically I'll do that a few times, back and forth, then leave them off, get back to driving.

And they should be yellow since that penetrates fog far better than 4000K does.

The current LEDs are likely 6000K.

"TOM: So the question becomes, to yellow or not to yellow? There's a lot of debate about this, but the research says that yellow lights are no better than white lights at penetrating fog. The theory bandied about was that yellow light has a longer wavelength and is therefore less likely to be reflected by the fog particles. Turns out, this is complete poppycock.

RAY: Apparently, the fog particles themselves are so big that they reflect all colors of light. Basically, all light bounces off of them, so using yellow light instead of white light gives you no advantage."

Welcome to the club. We were told that our mama wears army boots and our cars were ugly, so we clammed up and stopped talking to people. :censored:

I read that yellow was good as it alerts other drivers that it's a car - not another light, as not many lights are yellow. But it's probably 40 years since I've seen yellow fogs.

My 1973 VOLVO had white fogs, but they were a narrow flat beam and worked well in fog, and were wired properly so they only worked if the headlights were off. Putting headlights on with them, just defeats the fog and blinds you again - which is how most manufacturers do it nowadays - because they're only expensive decorations.

All I know is that yellow produces a lot less glare through fog than blue does. It's especially true for me given that I have mild cataracts and blue lights scatters causing lots of haze while yellow light doesn't.
