it won't be a problem unless you are unfortunate enough to be rear ended. even then, unlikely.

its a safety measure, and certainly one that an oem cannot ignore

Pep Boys seems to draw a blank for Prius batteries right now, which is odd. Maybe phone them. Up here, Canadian tire has one readily available (if I enter 2012 Toyota Prius):

"MotoMaster" is their house brand, not sure who actually makes it. Next time around I might give them a try. We got the motomaster replacement battery for our son's Civic, and it looked to be identical to the Honda battery, and worked out fine.

Bummer! I don't need one! The original owner replaced it a month or so before I bought the car.
I should be good for at least 4 or more years.

My suggestion would be to do a search on this site about using a mobility AGM battery in place of the AGM unit supplied by Toyota. I have a 2010 Prius and just picked up exactly that, a AGM sealed 12 volt 55 amp mobility battery that cost me $80. Although the Pep boys suggestion is a great one, unfortunately for me there are none in my area.

If I had a penny for every time I say that to myself when reading a new post.

I bought a pair of SAE to JIS adapters. I’m going to put a conventional 51 series battery in mine when the time comes. Rural King in my area has a 51AGM for 110. And I have the option of going back to the JIS battery if the need arises.

I just had my 2010 original Prius battery tested at Walmart. It tested good. Will take it back next year to test again. this is the 5th year i have had it tested!
My local tire-man dealer Toledo,Oh told me he could install a Crown agm batt. made in Fremont Ohio for 155$ with a 60 mo. warranty. If it ever fails.

I don't see a vent connection in the picture -- so the expelled hydrogen (and maybe other vapors) will end up in the cabin.

There is a vent on the Bosch AGM.battery and it is also reversible on both sides left and right.

If it is a true AGM type, there will not BE any gasses of other vapors to BE expelled.
Most AGM batteries do not even HAVE a connection for a vent hose.

That's normally true, but there could be gasses emitted under certain abnormal conditions.
Some AGM batteries that are not originally equipped with a vent connector (my $65 U1, for example) can easily be modified to have one.

It has the SAE posts. But I have a positive and negative JIS to SAE adapter, from http://www.batterymart.com. Their item numbers 850350 and 850250. $13 and change shipped in 3 days.

So, last week, I went to O'Reillys to check my battery as I assumed, based on my toys, that my battery is bad since every so often the voltage drops to below 12V. They have a digital device to test the battery and it showed that the battery is bad, the polite guy from my local O'Reilly in Camarillo, CA tried to find what is the cranking amps on the stock battery since it looked small to him, so we have tested it at 600 and then at 550 since we couldn't read the stock battery info, both times the tester showed, that the battery was bad. I asked to quote me a new battery to see what they have... Back in the store, while he was looking at new batteries starting at $194 he has also noticed that stock battery has only about 315 or 350 cranking power. We went back to the car and tested it at that level, voilla! The battery is good! I'm posting this just in case anyone else finds themselves in similar situation starring at the store battery tester screen showing "bad battery" with no explanation...

Yeah the stock battery on ours had no indication of the Cold Cranking Amps. A LOT of searching of Yuasa website later, I came to an iffy conclusion it was around 325'ish. A decent electronic load tester would display the as-tested CCA. A new battery, or one still in good shape, will have CCA well above the spec. If it's at the spec, or a bit lower, probably time for replacement.

    Is that the original battery?
