Would spitting on the car have been acceptable?

If they are losing $14K per unit, the CEO is correct. He is only interested in losing as much money as mandated by regulation, no more.

They like to make videos doing it. That's why I won't have much sympathy once gas prices start spiking again.

Fiat 500 Sales Figures | GCBC
Monthly Plug-In EV Sales Scorecard: August 2019

Looks like it was selling so poorly that fiat didn't want to spend the money to update it. US sales dropped from 47K in 2012 to 12.5K last year and this year it wasn't even going to sell that many. The ev sales this year are only 382, and the only way you pick it over a model 3 or prime or bolt is if fiat loses a lot of money on the sale. (model 3 has sold 250x as many this year).

Fiat should have plenty of stock on dealer lots into next year if you really want one.

So you see, the information is all wrong. FCA is discontinuing production of the 500 at the Toluca, Mexico plant. There is nothing to suggest they will not be importing it from another factory.

With these sales numbers, that is very unlikely.

I'd seen one or two coal-rolling events and I just changed lanes ... silently laughing at how many other cars in traffic were also subject to the same idiocy. Each coal rolling event did nothing to enhance the reputation of that diesel as a lot of moms and commuters were caught in the cloud. We share the road with more than just us.

I was referring to what a friend on an air force base in Mississippi was telling me... And granted the area of the Carolinas may be a bit crazy, but he was talking about Mississippi.

I looked up the RCW in Washington state and it's toothless. You have to produce greater then 80% Opacity for greater than 10 seconds before you get a ticket... That's a whole lotta coal you can roll... I've rarely seen more than 5 seconds...

It sounds mean but there is a method to my madness.

My BMW i3-REx was easier to spot but the Model 3 probably works as bait to trigger a coal roller. With the windows rolled up, the cabin filter works quite well. But the coal roller is also blowin' smoke on 3-4 times as many other cars.

Captured on dash cam, it gives modern diesels a worse reputation.

Those a-holes like (top down) convertibles too.....
I’ve got an older Boxster that been coal-rolled more than once, simply because they can.
Not to mention my Prius too.

Fiat/Chrysler/Jeep gets more bang for the buck out of there plug-in minivan. Much greater utility + many folks still have range anxiety. They don't even advertise it as a plugin, only calling it a hybrid - out of fear it will scare buyers off.

Gotta admit, “minivan” scares off 3/4 of the market and “hybrid” scares off 3/4 of the market, and they aren’t even the same 3/4. That’s a problem for them.

Except many of the buyers of a minivan competitor, that is known for hybrids, have been asking for hybrid minivan for years.

Interesting--I owned a Gen III Prius in Arkansas 2009-2017 during which time Prii went from being rare-but-not-unheard of to reasonably common-but-not-California-level-common. Got honked at some times in the early years, but never truly coal-rolled.

On a newer truck, it can cost thousands for the modification for coal rolling. So there probably aren't that many really out there, but their demostrations are highly visible. Which ruins it for those that want to responsibly own a diesel, and will likely mean the coal rollers will have to pay more for a diesel in the future.

Even as Auto Sales are generally sinking, @LeadfootJ.McCoalroller may be surprised how the minivan is having quite a resurgence.
How minivans and Jeeps led Fiat Chrysler to 74th month of sales gains
Considering the downturned market, & negative perception of a minivan that's quite a feat. As buyers learn how much higher the mileage is on a plug-in hybrid minivan (32mpg & 84MPGe), things may get even better once fuel costs return to prior history. Non-renewables don't last forever.
The Mini may have been killed off, but the minivan? Don't let anyone fool you. it's got Swagger ~ enen toyota's non-hybrid - non plugin
