Took a trip to the US today. On the way down? I briefly checked the HV mileage. It was raining decently today (the road had enough water that the trucks’ spray were nearly obscuring their taillights). HV at 70mph plus the initial acceleration from near zero on the on ramp net about 5.1L/100km (46mpg). It was too short of a distance to really get a true number since the moment I slowed to 60mph for the 60mph zone, it improved to 4.8L/100km (49mpg). On the way back, I started with 10% charge in the EV portion of the battery. By the time I got to the highway and accelerated to 60mph, it dropped to about 6-7%. I switched to HV mode and then when I entered the 70mph zone, switched to CHG Mode. I got it up to about 25-30%? About 14km or 8-9 miles. The average consumption was as bad as 5.8L/100km (40.1mpg) Got to the border and switched to EV Auto. After the border, continued in EV Auto until the battery discharged (at that point, it functioned like EV Mode so I still gained no extra knowledge about EV Auto operation). There’s a rise after the border and then a relatively steep drop to the delta. The EV portion was fortuitously used up on the uphill portion and I gained a bit on the downhill before the delta/flat land. Cruised at 100km/h (62mph) on flat land for a while. (About 24km or 15 miles). Went to CHG Mode for the latter 3-5km (2-3 miles) and hit traffic (again, lucked out with the CHG Mode and gaining EV range for crawling in traffic). After the traffic, travelled another 5-7km (3-4 miles) then exited the highway. Had 2-3km (1-2 miles) of range left but it was 4km (2.5 miles) to the destination so I rolled into it in HV mode (but of course you can still drive in EV mode with a light foot). Total distance: 73.5km (45.9 miles). Consumption: 3.6L/100km (65 mpg). I mean c’mon! None of the old Prii can even touch this. I’d wager the Gen 4 couldn’t touch it (but it’ll be close). The total distance today was just over 200km (125 miles) and the mpg is under 3.0L/100km (>78mpg). That included the initial charge at home and the half charge after that photo was taken.
I guess the question is whether i would’ve been better off just in hybrid mode on the return trip. I’d wager I’ll be higher, maybe in the 4L/100km range (high 50s)
I believe you would lose that wager with US gallon mpg. I KNOW you would lose if your mpg is Imperial gallon based. I regularly drive 26+ miles per day and I am sure I could find examples in my vehicle history exceeding 65 mpg US.
Here is today after I got to work along with a history shot. I generally get better mpg on the way home.
I’ve never used charge mode. I just swap between HV/EV and EV Auto for my drives. Saving the EV Auto for traffic and flat or downward sloping terrain. HV/EV is reserved for hill climbs, upward trending terrain and getting up to freeway speeds. Has returned 156.4 mpg for the 9800 miles our Prime has on it, which is more trips than just to work and back.
Yes. Starting elevation is 210m. Border is about 50-60m Rises to about 120m then drops to near sea level (as described in the OP with the rise after border then a steep drop) So you're saying I could've just left it in HV mode?
You could have got a car with a full back seat and a spare tire. Although you would sacrifice the 17” wheels for 15” you and nobody else can see the difference when you are driving down the road. You would have also saved money on the cost of the car
Except I only use gas on long trips. Even when travelling 60 miles within town, I can get around in full EV. Instead of 15.5 tanks, I’m sitting at 2.75 tanks.
I’ve had my car for almost 2 years. A little over 11,000 miles on it. I have only added 6.5 gallons since the purchase. Still have 3/4 of a tank left. Should be able to make it 2020 before putting more gas in. Still loving my prime.
Congrats on the numbers you're seeing. I can't say I understand everything you're describing about the road conditions, elevation changes, switching modes in route, etc. I think I get the overall emphasis you're trying to describe though. 78 mpg for 125 mile trip is pretty phenomenal mileage if you ask me.
My record to date in HV is 91.1 mpg 91.1 miles per gallon = 38.7305917468978 kilometer / lite on a 50 mile 50 mile = 80.4672 kilometer drive with a 20 mph 20 mile = 32.18688 kilometer tail wind. Most of the 50 miles was at 55 mph 55 mile = 88.51392 kilometer with about 10 miles 10 mile = 16.09344 kilometer at 30 mph 30 mile = 48.28032 kilometer and about 1 mile mile = 1.609344 kilometer at 40 mph 40 mile = 64.37376 kilometer. The 50 miles in the other direction clocked in at low 60's mpg 62 miles per gallon = 26.3589098606769 kilometer / liter with the 20 mph headwind and the warmup cycle. @Tideland Prius since this is an International forum is there a definition in the glossary as to what gallon is used here by default? The numbers using Imperial gallons will always look better compared to the smaller US gallon. This is a US based forum though.
Given it’s a US-centric forum, it should be US gallons. (Unless I see “UK” in a member’s profile then I’ll double check). For me, I quote in US gallons. I don’t bother with Imperial gallon. I prefer to use L/100km. Yup that’s pretty much what I was trying to say. The rest was mostly for people who wanted more details (since we know mpg is dependent on many variables).
