Help ! Rattle noise from the trunk !

    Hello,

    Since I bought my Prius solar, I hear a rattle noise from the trunk. First I though it was the luggage cover but when I took it off, the noise was still here.

    Then I took every pieces of plastic out of the car, and the noise is still here...

    Under left plastic tray :

    I have the impression that the noise is coming from the plastic part in the middle of the rear glass, but I'm not sure....

    What do you think ? This noise is driving me crazy !

    What does your dealer say about this ?
    Although not specifically covered by warranty, most dealers will try to help.

    Could it be something loose in the rear wheels or suspension ??

    This is a tough one. After listening to the recording, based on the lack of mass of the object, I'm guessing it's plastic. Based on the speed at which it vibrates, it must be in a small space to make the oscillation happen that rapidly. I does not vibrate faster with vehicle speed.

    Where was your friend sitting when he recorded the noise? If you lay the rear seats flat, have your friend get in the back so he can get his ear very close to where the noise is coming from. That might narrow down the location making it easier to identify.

    I didn't bring it to the dealer yet.But I think it can be cover with garanty, for me it's not normal and something could be loose in the car...


    Sometimes just a tiny bump on the road at 5 mph and I can hear the noise. When I leave my garage I have a 90° left turn and downhill, and while I turn I can hear it a little too...
    My friend was on the rear seat. That's what I wanted to do, a friend in the trunk, but I hope the battery can handle a person weight ?

    Absolutely no problem and I think it will really help find the location of the noise.

    Ok thank you, I will give a try, this noise is really annoying. It's not very loud (it's louder on the song) but the car is so quiet...

    The recording was great! It was very helpful. If it's in the rear seat area, there is the jack underneath the left passenger seat.

    I took the jack off, and same noise. My friend told me, the noise seems to come from the plastic part beetween the two rear glass, but he wasn't sure at 100%

    Unless someone else here has an idea, I'd see if your dealer can help now that you've narrowed it down. Tell them the steps you took to eliminate and narrow down the location and play the sound recording for them to hear.

    Yes, that's why I did all this things by myself... I prefer that the dealer does not touch too much my vehicle.... :)

    I have bad experience with VW here in France : they touch something, they break something else... :cry:

    I don't know about Toyota that said....

    Does anyone know how to do to take off the liftgate cover ? I just have to pull over the plastic parts ?

    Ok, I was able to advance on the subjet : A friend pressed both ends of the trunk, like a pair of pliers, between the part of the tailgate and the fixed part and the noise stopped ...
    So I think there is a concern with the adjustment, it must vibrate...

    Do you know how to set the misalignment ?

    Good job on narrowing it down. I know you have apprehension to going to the dealer, but I think it's time.

    Yes and I downloaded on the toyota TIS how to do it, it doesn't look too difficult...
    At least they won't have to search.

    I found exactly which piece was doing the noise :

    I put some rubber on it and the noise stopped. That's both of them (each side) which were doing the noise.

    It doesn't look straight, so I don't know if it's normal. Can someone can compare with his car ?

    Can you zoom out a bit...I'm not quite sure where you are referencing. The material looks like the carbon fiber of the back liftgate but where on it? Are you under any plastic coverings?

    It's the side of the liftgate, on the edge. Both right and left side. It's not under plastic, it's just screw in the carbon fiber

    This is exactly the rattle sound on my car too. Mine I did put the rubber on the bumper / stopper where this piece of plastic mates. I will try this tomorrow and hopefully it fixes the rattle noise.
